I was going through some resumes (or CVs) recently and it shocked me back into writing a blog post about them. The CVs posted were for a junior software developer role in Sri Lanka. Hopefully these tips will help you along the way to find a good starter job. Don’t include your personal details like National ID, gender, date of ...
You would think in 2003 that the Internet would be fast and reliable. Not so much where I live in Sri Lanka. The major and only wired provider Sri Lanka Telecom’s (SLT) ADSL is unusable as I write this. Around the end of the month the SLT ADSL line starts to suffer. Usually when I change packages it seems to ...
I’m back on Linux, back in trouble as well. Ok so downloading and installing the latest deb file for VirtualBox doesn’t work out of a box. I found this in the VirtualBox forum. It turns out you need to install these packages first. sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-generic Then install the deb file sudo dpkg -i virtualbox-4.2_4.2.10-84104~Ubuntu~quantal_amd64.deb
Usually I just update OSX to the latest. But I came across this after a quick search. Skype 6.3 crashes on Mac OSX 10.8.3 – Skype Community I use Skype quite often so I’m going to hold off for a bit longer until things are sorted out.

By: Keith Williamson Somebody has to say it. Being a professional in Sri Lanka is hard work. Most of the time you have to deal with people who don’t know what they are doing. Without ranting on let me lay down a few cases and try to offer some advice (even though it might not be my job to do ...
My menu bar was getting crowded. So I went in and disabled almost everything I could find. And now it looks like this. I found a solution to hide the DropBox icon as well, but I figured I can live with these for now.
Don’t do your thinking at the computer. There are just too many things to distract you. Find your sweet-spot sitting in traffic or with pen and paper at a desk.
Its hard. If you are not 100% sure you are going to make it, don’t do it, because once you are in there is no going back. Keep your day job, start on the side if possible. No one is going to lend you money at first but when things are picking up investment will come. It depends what you ...
By: Ramunas Geciauskas Going through my messy blog posts for the last 5 years I realised that I need to become a better writer. Although it’s not my current job to write well, I think it needs to be better so I can improve my life. All this time I thought this was a coder’s blog, one that shows I’m ...
By: Logan Ingalls Let me explain. Sometime ago I was around some kids and picked up a good business lesson. There were some new kids trying to make friends in a crowd. The kids that said hi and found similar traits connected well and hung out for a log time. Kids that formed bonds via sharing treats like cookies didn’t ...
By: Kate Ter Haar I said cut but I didn’t say how and where to start cutting down your digital clutter. The Downloads folder This is usually a big one. It was about 4GB when I had a look this morning. Using the size and date sorting I figured out the biggest and oldest files and dumped them first. If ...
There is something about the end of the year that makes you write profound and life altering statements and make new year resolutions. This one is about cutting down, deleting and clearing up. I have written about this 4 years ago so I guess its an ongoing process. Most people have realised that they deal with just too many things in the ...
Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos | Politics and Law – CNET News Seriously? If I was a serious user I would have paid for a pro version of the service. That could have been a revenue model right? Oh well. I want to delete my account • Instagram Help Center
The LinkedIn skill tagging feature is catching on. But I think most people are not using it properly. I get endorsements for skills from my friends and contacts. Friends will endorse all my skills even if we haven’t worked on them together. Contacts seem to endorse so that they can get endorsed back. Again not really paying attention to ...

The A6 from Kurunegala to Dambulla is not so great. There are trains of 5 ton sand trucks (I’m guessing) going to Trinco or Jaffna and back. I like Dambulla but I seriously didn’t enjoy driving up and down on this stretch.
