The Stomp music festival takes place on the 8th and 9th of December, featuring the English trance group Above and Beyond. According to an arcane system of ranking (DJ magazine) the trio ranks 8th in the world for 2012. They’ll be accompanied by Jaytech, De La Mare, Dinka and Eve Carey, as well as familiar local acts Asvajit, Yazz, Shiyam, etc.
Cloud Red is the newest and highest rooftop bar in Colomb. The view from the top is spectacular, their cocktails are good and so is the food. The drinks are a bit pricey but with the ambience we don't really mind.
Eshantha Peiris and Sumudi Suraweera run an amazing school called Music Matters. They teach the love of music, and the teachers – when they jam – are some of the best musicians in the country. They always put on a creative and interesting show, and have interesting guests from here and abroad. They’re resuming their Thursday evening jazz sessions starting this ...

After reviewing Munchkin’s French macarons we received a tip directing us to another home baker: Sweet Wishes by Vish. We hadn’t heard of Vish before but she seems to be extremely popular and well known – her Facebook page has over 6000 likes. So we ordered macarons again. A box of 10 with an assortment chocolate & mint, coffee & ...
The Center For Poverty Analysis (CEPA) is holding a two day symposium on the 11th and 12th of December, at BMICH. Is this the worst ‘National Gallery’ in the world? I dropped in at our nation’s premier public art gallery the other day to find it in shambles. Now the National Art Gallery at Green Path has never been one of the world’s great art collections but its current state is deeply unacceptable – it’s quite possibly the worst national-level art ...
This interesting temple in vibrant Kotahena is a unique blend of Thai, colonial and local architecture. It’s also the oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo. Founded in 1785, it was the first Buddhist temple the colonial powers allowed in Colombo, because the Ven. Migettuewatte Sri Gunananda Thera built it as an extension to his house. It has been a place patronised and visited by ...
The French Connection and Out Of Time are playing a benefit concert for the IDE School on the 30th November (Friday). Barefoot usually hosts a good show and it’s for a good cause.
The pink pool at Casa Colombo is less of a pool and more an indulgent pink wallowing hole, though you can manage a few ‘lengths’ at the far end. It works, though, as Casa is more of a fantasy than a real hotel. With its pink lava lighting, impossibly fecund mango tree centrepiece and floating silver orbs the pool, like ...
Not always, but sometimes, YAMU attempts – attempts being the key word – a little bit of art direction when it comes to food photography. We’ve placed colourful cocktails against the backdrop of a shimmering turquoise ocean and balanced delicate french macarons on a martini glass. Once we even arranged cake pops and cupcakes on a midgame scrabble board. ...
AYU thé (Ayu branded tea) makes tasty bespoke blends of tea (strawberry, ginger honey, etc). They’re available at the Good Market on Thursdays or by delivery. Good either hot or cold. Despite being a huge tea supplier, most Sri Lankans only consume two sorts of tea – plain or with milk. One young company has started blending their own unique ...
Every time I visit I’m surprised this place still exists. With its ancient coffee grinding equipment, fragrant sacks of substandard local coffee and scant business I’m not sure how it survives. I suppose its owned by Island Coffee, one of the main producers of local coffee, but like Island it appears to have come into existence during the 60/70s socialist ...
