It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Abu Saeed Khan, a renowned telecommunications expert, and Senior Policy Fellow at LIRNEasia. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Over the course of his career, Abu held several significant roles, including Secretary General of the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) and Strategy Analyst at Ericsson’s Southeast Asian head office in Malaysia. He also served as the Technology Editor for bdnews24.com and conducted research analysis at EMC World Cellular Database.

Abu’s impactful journalism influenced telecom policies in Bangladesh, prompting interventions that saved public funds in telecom procurements. He played a key role in convincing the government to join the SEA-ME-WE4 consortium and establish the ATOB Tandem switch, addressing interconnection issues with the state-owned monopoly.

In his role at LIRNEasia, Abu conducted research on extending rural connectivity through microfinance approaches and reducing internet bandwidth costs across Asia. He advocated for the construction of a terrestrial optical fiber link alongside the Asian Highway, known initially as the Longest International Open-access Network (LION) and later renamed as the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (AP-IS).

Abu’s contributions to the telecommunications sector and his dedication to improving connectivity in Bangladesh and across Asia leave a lasting legacy.
