Sri Lanka pull off a historic win over Australia in the Tri-Series opener

Sri Lanka registered a thrilling win over Australia in the first match of the Women’s U19 Tri-Nation Series 2024 played today (28th March) at Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Manudi Nanayakkara opted to bat first and they managed to post 117 runs for 6 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

The opening batter Sanjana Kavindi was the standout batter for the hosts as she scored 28 runs off 27 balls with 4 fours and a six. Hasrat Gill and Eleanor Larosa starred with the ball for the visitors, snaring 2 wickets each.

In reply, Australia were able to post only 110 runs for 5 wickets as Sri Lanka showcased an impressive bowling display to restrict the opposition. Dewmi Wijerathna was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as she grabbed 2 wickets for 22 runs in her 4-over spell.

This is the first time that Sri Lanka Women’s U19 Team defeated Australia Women’s U19 Team in any format. Sri Lanka will meet England in their second game of the tournament on the 30th March at the same venue.
