S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia regained the 47thMustangs Trophy as they defeated Royal College, Colombo in the annual limited overs encounter played today (16thMarch) at SSC Grounds, Colombo.

S. Thomas’ College Skipper Mahith Perera won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first on a batting friendly surface at SSC Grounds.

The wicket-keeper batter Sadev Soysa and Avinash Fernando provided a solid start to the innings, adding 75-run partnership for the first wicket. Soysa and the Skipper Mahith Perera also put on a half-century stand in the middle order to lift S. Thomas’ College.

Soysa was the top scorer for S. Thomas’ College as he made 65 runs off 70 balls with 5 fours and a six. Thisen Eheliyagoda, who batted at No. 5 for the Thomians, also notched up a fine half-century to take their side to a competitive total – 256/8.

Ranuka Malaviarachchi was the pick of the bowlers for Royal College as he snared 4 wickets for 53 runs in his 9-over spell.

In reply, Royal College got off to a wobbly start as they lost 2 wickets inside the powerplay, including the Skipper Sineth Jayawardana. Anush Polonowita and Isula Geeganage chipped in with crucial 30s to steady the ship for Royal College.

However, Royal College continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, keeping the door open for the opposition to strengthen their grip on the game. Shane Abeyratne fought back with a gritty half-century, but it was not enough to put their side over the line as they fell 30 runs short of the target at the end.

Nathan Caldera and Dineth Goonewardene were brilliant with the ball for the Thomians as they picked up 3 wickets each.
