St. Sebastian’s College registered a 20-run win over Prince of Wales’ College to clinch the 39th One Day Encounter played today (10th March) at P. Sara Oval Grounds, Colombo.
Prince of Wales’ College skipper Achala Perera won the toss and opted to field first. Sebastian’s opening pair, Janaka Silva and Ryan Dissanayaka, provided a decent start to their innings, adding 54 runs for the first wicket.
Silva then built another vital partnership worth 84 runs for the 2nd wicket, with No. 3 batter Vimath Dinsara setting the ton for a formidable total. Silva was the top scorer for the Sebastain’s as he made 65 runs off 86 balls with 10 fours.
Dinsara (44), Adesh Almeida (32) and Tharindu Dilanka (40) also made crucial knocks in the middle order as St. Sebastian’s College posted a competitive total – 265 on the board.
Uneth Peiris, Achala Perera and Suwas Fernando starred with the ball, snaring 2 wickets each for Prince of Wales College.
In reply, Prince of Wales’ College got off to a brilliant start as their opening pair Rivith Jayasooriya and Rusandu Silva put on 98 runs for the first wicket. But after the dismissals of Jayasooriya and Silva, the Cambrians faced a chaotic period in the middle, losing 4 quick wickets for 43 runs.
The skipper Achala Perera and Uneth Peiris tried to put the Cambrians over the line with useful 30s, but they weren’t enough. The Sebastian bowlers held their nerve to restrict Prince of Wales College to 245 runs, snatching a 20-run win.
Adesh Almeida, Malintha Silva and Koshendra Fernando picked up 2 wickets each for the victorious St. Sebastian’s College. Janaka Silva, who played a match-winning knock for St. Sebastian’s College, won the player of the match award.
