Bangladesh bounce back in style to level the T20I series

Sri Lanka tour of Bangladesh 2024

200

Bangladesh bounced back in style to register a convincing win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I to level the three-match series, 1-1 at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss for the second consecutive time and invited the visitors to take the first lease of the wicket once again.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis(w), Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka(c), Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Binura Fernando, Matheesha Pathirana

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Litton Das(w), Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto(c), Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali, Mahedi Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Rishad Hossain

Fernando and Mendis opened the batting for Sri Lanka but the former threw his wicket away once again for a duck. Mendis and Kamindu then built a crucial partnership worth 66 runs off 42 balls for the second wicket.

Both of them then departed in quick succession as Bangladesh bowlers managed to pull things back to certain extent. The skipper Asalanka (28), Mathews (32*) and Shanaka (20*) chipped in with vital contributions as Sri Lanka reached a decent total – 165/5 at the end of 20 overs.

The hosts had a great start to the run-chase as their opening pair Soumya Sarkar and Litton Das added 63 runs in the powerplay phase of the innings. Matheesha Pathirana struck twice in consecutive overs to send both the set batters to dressing room but most of the damage was done by then.

Sri Lankan bowlers weren’t able to pull things back after those two quick dismissals as the skipper Najmul Shanto continued to pile on the runs playing a captain’s knock. He was very well supported by No. 4 batter Towhid Hridoy as the duo added a match-winning unbeaten partnership of 87 runs for the 3rd wicket to guide their side home comfortably.

The third and final T20I of the series between the sides will be played on the 9th March at the same venue.
