Having won the toss, Indian skipper Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first in the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. Sri Lanka had decided to field the same playing XI despite losing the series opener a couple of days ago while India made two changes to their winning combination bringing in the debutant Rahul Tripathi and Arshdeep Singh for Sanju Samson and Harshal Patel.

The inclusion of Tripathi in the playing XI was a forced change for the hosts as Indian top order batter Samson has been ruled out of the remaining two T20Is against Sri Lanka after hurting his left knee during the first game in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(w), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka

India (Playing XI): Ishan Kishan(w), Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Rahul Tripathi, Hardik Pandya(c), Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Shivam Mavi, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

Sri Lanka’s opening pair Mendis and Nissanka got their team off to a flying start putting on 80 runs off 50 balls for the first wicket. After the fall of opening stand, Sri Lanka lost a cluster of wickets in the middle phase of the innings putting them on to the backfoot at 138/6 at the end of 16 overs.

However, the skipper Shanaka once again stood out with the bat against his favorite opposition smashing the fastest ever fifty by a Sri Lankan in T20Is.

Fastest T20I 50 (balls played) for Sri Lanka

  • Dasun Shanaka – 20* vs India (2023)
  • Mahela Jayawerdene – 21 vs Kenya (2007)
  • Kumar Sangakkara – 21 vs India (2009)
  • Kusal Perera – 22 vs India (2018)
  • Sanath Jayasuriya – 23 vs New Zealand (2006)

Shanaka and Karunaratne added 68 runs off 24 balls for the 7th wicket as Sri Lanka ended with a huge total of 206/6 after 20 years. India had to tend to their own self-inflicted wounds due to undisciplined bowling effort. The hosts conceded 12 extras which included 7 no-balls and 5 wides.

Sri Lanka started off pretty well with the ball dismissing half of the Indian side inside the first 10 overs. When India were reeling at 57/5 in the 10th over, the in-form batter Yadav and all-rounder

Patel got together at the crease and built an astonishing 91-run partnership for the 6th wicket keeping the hosts’ hopes alive.

Sri Lanka’s ace spinner Hasaranga went to the cleaners as he conceded 26 runs in the 14th over. The 19th over from Rajitha made the difference as he executed most of his balls brilliantly despite starting the over with two wides. Since Sri Lanka’s main spin weapon Hasaranga had an off-day, the skipper Shanaka had to bring himself to bowl the last over with India needing 20 to win.

He conceded only 4 runs in that over as Sri Lanka prevailed at the end beating India in a T20I game on Indian soil after 7 years. It was also Sri Lanka’s first win against India in India in 11 T20Is, interestingly the last win also coming at the same Ground (Pune) in 2016.

With this win, the 3-match series is now locked at 1-1 where the deadlock will be resolved in the series decider in Rajkot on Saturday (07th January).
