Harshitha Samarawickrama leads Sri Lanka to convincing win over Thailand

Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2022

Sri Lanka beat Thailand by 49 runs in the 7th match of Women’s Asia Cup 2022 played today (04th October) at Sylhet Outer Cricket Stadium in Sylhet.

Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss for the third consecutive time and opted to bat first in their third game of the tournament. They made one change to the playing XI bringing in Oshadi Ranasinghe in the place of Malsha Shehani.

The skipper Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama opened the innings for Sri Lanka and the duo managed to provide an excellent partnership for the team as they added 63 runs off 51 balls for the first wicket. However, out of form Athapaththu didn’t contribute much to the partnership as she made only 12 runs.

Samarawickrama, who won the Player of the Match award in the last game against UAE, continued to impress with the bat, scoring a brilliant 81 off 69 balls with 10 fours. She was well supported by No. 4 batter Nilakshi de Silva who played a quickfire cameo of 39 runs off 21 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 185.71.

Madavi and De Silva added 61-run partnership for the 3rd wicket which helped Sri Lanka post a solid score of 156/5 in the allotted 20 overs.

In their turn with the ball, Sri Lanka showed a much better bowling display using their experience at international stage. Thailand batters did chance their arm at times with the bat but never quite threatened the target.

Thailand’s No. 4 batter Chanida Sutthiruang held one end up but didn’t get enough support from the other batters as Sri Lanka restricted them to 107/5, clinching a comprehensive 49-run win. With this win, Sri Lanka moved up to the 3rd place in the points table securing 2 wins in 3 games with 4 points to their name.

Sri Lanka will take on Malaysia in their next game on the 08th October at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
