Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon blazed to Gold in the Men’s 100m event at the Resisprint International 2022, with 9.96s (+1.6 m/s) run in Switzerland.
He became the 1st South Asian to register a time below 10 seconds in the 100m, also climbing to 4th position on the fastest times by an Asian across the distance.
He renewed the National and South Asian Record for the event of 10.06s set in late May.
Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon clocks a national 100m record of 9.96 (1.6m/s) in La Chaux de Fonds.
Yupun becomes the first athlete from South Asia to run sub-10. Sri Lanka becomes the 32nd country with a sub-10 sprinter, and Yupun is the 167th member of the sub-10 club.

The sprinter had a disappointing start in the Stockholm Diamond League just two days ago (1st July), where he managed a 4th place finish with a time of 10.21s but has shown potential to crossing the 10 second barrier during this season, with timings of 10.04s (+2.3 m/s) in Savona, 10.06s (-0.2 m/s) Anhalt and 10.08s (-1.2 m/s) in Ostrava.

Earlier in the day, Abeykoon finished first in his heat with a time of 10.11s to go through to the final.
Cuba’s Reynier Meyna finishen 2nd with a time of 9.99s while Méba Mickaël Zeze took home Bronze with 10s flat.
Abeykoon is set to compete in the Men’s 100m at the World Athletic Championships set to begin on the 15th of July, followed by the Commonwealth Games (Athletics events will begin in August).
