Classic Shaving

Every morning I go through my routine which includes the daily shave. I’ve been doing this ever since my dad taught me to wield the tool(Gillette Mach 3) and shave the whiskers when I was 14. I hadn’t thought much of it for many years but recently the on-going requirement to spend exorbitant amounts of money to buy what is essentially cheap plastic in the latest greatest multi-blade razor got me thinking. There’s got to be a better way! Each of us spends a considerable amount of time on this act throughout our life, so why not make it something better than average and save some money doing it.

I have shaved with multi blade razors (Gillette Mach3, Fusion, Schick Hydro) paired with canned shaving gel since I began shaving. In my arguably short time shaving it is apparent that every year the razor manufacturers appear to be increasing the blade count and increasing the price and telling us why the latest 3/5/7 blade is better than earlier blades. Having followed this process of ‘upgrading’ for many years I decided to see if there was anything else out there. My research led me to “classic” wet shaving with a DE (Double Edge) Razor. A single blade Safety razor paired with shaving lather generated from a shaving cream or soap. Could it be that a single blade could provide a better closer shave while saving me money at the same time??? In my usual vigor I dove into the researching the topic and discovered many forums and youtube channels. It turns out that the DE Shaving phenomenon has somewhat of a cult following in the western world and is still considerable popular in the east due to its economic benefits  There are many who swear by the results of the Double Edge / Single Edge / Straight or Cutthroat razors.

After much research I decided that I would buy a starter kit.

Merkur Classic 33c
Franks best Badger hair brush
Proraso Green Soap
A sampling of blades.

And so begins my foray into Classic DE shaving.

Wish me luck!
