DC Fandome 2021: What to expect

DC Comics is returning with its virtual entertainment and comic convention, DC Fandome, for the second consecutive year, coming 16th of October.

DC introduced us to Fandome last year. Following the pandemic and the lack of Comic Cons and Geek Exhibitions, Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC started their own virtual event, which ran for a full 24 hours on the 22nd of August 2020. Fans around the globe rejoiced in celebrating a lot of announcements, panels, and trailers as well as a free library of comics given to the public to read for free.

Throwback to DC Fandome 2020

There was a lot happening in the first DC Fandome. On the movie front, it’s safe to say that Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Matt Reeves’ The Batman were easily the highlights of last year. They both debuted their teaser trailers which gained massive views and created an unmatched hype for the movies. This resulted in the general audiences gaining interest in the director’s cut of Justice League and Robert Pattinson winning over the fans for his Batman debut.

The hype was real for Zack Synder’s Justice League

Apart from these two, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, The Flash, and all the upcoming movies had bits and pieces to reveal.

On the games front, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Batman: Gotham Knights were announced along with their debut trailers.

Last year was an eventful one. So what can fans expect from this year’s event?

This year’s lineup

There’s a lot of things to be excited about at this year’s DC Fandome but the spotlight goes to the DCEU projects, from Matt Reeves to James Gunn, all of DC’s current directors will be at the dome showing off their latest work. All the TV shows from CW and HBO max, as well as the WB Interactive Entertainment, will be there with their new game news. Viewers can expect panels for each and every title listed below.

The Batman (2022)

Matt Reeves’ take on the caped crusader, initially set to be released on the 01st of October 2021, is now scheduled to be released on March 04th, 2022. The movie will feature a panel and will debut its first full trailer at Fandome. Robert Pattinson, who plays the titular role of Bruce Wayne and Batman will be present at the panel along with Director Matt Reeves, and Zoe Kravitz who will be starring as the iconic Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

Black Adam (2022)

The highly anticipated DCEU movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the main role, which has been in development for over a decade is finally going to hit theatres. It is scheduled to be released on July 29th, 2022. Furthermore, the movie is scheduled to have a panel in DC Fandome along with a teaser trailer release. Dwayne Johnson is confirmed to make an appearance on the panel.

The Flash (2022)

Thanks to the critically acclaimed director Andy Muschietti, The scarlet speedster is finally getting his live-action movie with Ezra Miller returning for the role of Barry Allen from Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s set to be released on 04th November 2022 will have a panel of its own with the cast.

However, while fans are expecting a teaser, producer Barbara Muschietti has said on Instagram that there will be no teaser. On a more positive note, we can expect a BTS featurette from the production that’s currently ongoing.

The film also stars Michael Keaton, returning for the role of Batman and Bruce Wayne. Meanwhile, Ben Affleck is also returning for the same role of Batman which he played in Justice League and BvS. Undoubtedly this movie is going to feature as a multiverse movie, which is really exciting.

Shazam! The Fury of the Gods (2023)

Following the success of the first movie, a second Shazam! movie was immediately greenlit with Director David Sandberg returning to helm the sequel. Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, who plays the roles of the titular hero and his human form, Billy Batson will be making an appearance in the panel, and the rest of the cast is expected to be there as well.

Since the movie only recently wrapped production and is two years away, expecting a teaser will only lead to disappointment but we can surely look forward to a BTS featurette.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom (2022)

A sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Aquaman was surely going to happen after the movie made over USD 1 billion in box office revenue and director James Wan is returning to helm the sequel, with Jason Momoa in the titular role and Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul Mateen II as Black Manta and Patric Wilson as Orm reprising their roles, the movie is set to be released in December 2022.

Despite the closer release date, the movie is still in production so we can only expect a BTS featurette and mainly a panel with the full cast.

Peacemaker (2022)

The HBO max spinoff series of the beloved character from The Suicide Squad, played by John Cena will have its own panel and a teaser reveal at the dome. Showrunner/Director James Gunn, Cena himself (although you might not be able to see him) and other cast members will be present at the panel.

There is a chance of getting a second season announcement as well as more clips for this show since it will be debuting as early as January 2022, only on HBO max.

DC’s League of Super-pets (2022)

DC’s newest animated feature, this time about the pets of the DC universe will debut in May 2022, and it has a stellar cast including Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, John Krasinski, Diego Luna, Keanu Reeves, and more. This will not be connected to the rest of the DC animated or live-action universes but it promises to be a fun ride.

We can expect a potential trailer at this year’s Fandome along with a panel featuring Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the cast.

Suicide Squad – Kill the Justice League (2022)

Rocksteady’s newest DC adventure, featuring the infamous Task Force X will have its panel and a trailer debut is expected at this year’s Fandome. Rocksteady first announced the game last year during the first DC Fandome. A reveal trailer was debuted, where our villains-turned-heroes Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, and Captain Boomerang seem to be going up against Superman. It will be exciting to finally get more story details and hopefully, some gameplay reveal at this year’s Fandome.

Gotham Knights (2022)

WB Montreal’s newest original venture Gotham Knights will have a panel, and a trailer debut is expected as well. During last year’s Fandome we got to see a trailer that included gameplay. The game will allow you to play as either Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, or The Red Hood as the four are forced to reunite and fight crime in Gotham due to Batman’s disappearance/death. The game is set to be released in 2022 and it will be a two-player co-op game.

Everything else

Whew! That was a lot. But that’s not all. There will be other TV shows, movies, and games also be appearing at the Fandome, with panels featuring the cast and showrunners, and trailer debuts. A few of these projects include,

  • CW’s Batwoman
  • CW’s Naomi
  • CW’s Superman and Lois
  • CW’s Supergirl (Final season)
  • Titans
  • Stargirl
  • Batman: The Caped Crusader
