COVID-19 has upended the lives of billions of people across the globe up to date. As the virus surges in an unprecedented manner, scientists along with medical professionals are mobilizing in a united effort to confront and delay its spread. The goal is not only to “flatten the curve” but also “crush the curve” within Sri Lankan boundaries and beyond, to bring back the healthy and livable atmosphere so that we can restart our normal life.
When the COVID-19 crisis appeared on the horizon, doctors and healthcare officials were the ones who answered the call of duty and rushed to the frontline of this battle, knowingly risking their lives in the hopes of saving others. What we are witnessing right now is the true revealing of what it means to be called a medical professional as their tireless and selfless giving of care is portrayed from every aspect. Ever since the pandemic struck the country, they have been working tirelessly round the clock to saving millions of lives of people. No matter it is day or night, village, or country, they have always put the patients’ lives before their own.
It is well said that some crises do not make you or break you – instead, it reveals you. The same applies here too as it is the pandemic that once again reminded us of the immense value of our country’s frontline warriors, every member of the medical sector. Wearing gowns, masks, gloves, goggles and walking back and forth around beds and ventilators is not an easy task. It’s more like being in a war zone, fighting in a battle for the lives of patients.
The beauty of every victory resides in compassion, sacrifice, and perseverance. While healing the world, many committed doctors have succumbed to the deadly virus, which they contracted during their work. As a result, we have lost and are losing thousands of healthcare workers who put their heart and soul at stake unflinchingly to save the world.
Amidst all this tragedy, we witnessed the demise of one of the greatest doctors in our country; Dr. Saeed Rafaidheen (beloved father of our batchmate Mahammed Hasan), who came back to the health sector to serve the Corona infected patients at Katugastota Regional Hospital, even after his retirement. Another one is now added to the list of doctors who have died from this virus. Words aren’t enough to thank Dr. Saeed for his unwavering commitment and devotion to save human lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. With all his experience and intelligence, he tried mightily to reassure a worried nation, with utmost professionalism.
Our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Saeed Rafaidheen’s family for this great loss. His gentle soul will always be in our hearts.
Let us pay tribute to Dr. Saeed and all other frontline warriors of the medical sector who fought against the pandemic and sacrificed their lives in our defense, locally and globally.
At the very moment, the frontline warriors are stressed, frightened, and overworked; yet they would not step back from their duty as they would continue to serve for the greater good of the society and country.
