Thomian number 4 batsman Ryan Fernando continued his good form with the bat scoring a masterful century as he pulled S. Thomas’ College out of the woods against St. Peter’s College on an eventful day one of their traditional encounter which commenced today (16th April) at Mount Lavinia. In addition, two more traditional encounters of the Schools U19 Cricket tournament were also held today in Colombo.  

St. Benedict’s College, Colombo vs Gurukula College, Kelaniya  

Gurukula College managed to take major honors in the drawn traditional encounter against St. Benedict’s College which ended today at Kotahena. The left-arm spinner  Vihanga Iranjana (5/19) was the star of the match as he could restrict the hosts to a low score of 118 runs in the first innings. 

Kemira Nayanatharu (66), Janitha Shehan (54*) and Neluka Heshan (54) also starred with the bat for the visitors putting up a solid total on the board in their first innings.

Royal College, Colombo vs Wesley College, Colombo   

The traditional encounter between Royal College and Wesley College commenced today at Royal College Grounds. The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first but things didn’t go their way as planned as they were bowled out for 188 runs. 

Dasis Manchanayaka was the only standout performer with the bat for Royals as he made 78 runs off 89 balls with 12 fours. Wesley College put on a disciplined collective bowling effort led by S.zhakirthan (3/21), Thenuka Perera (3/32) and Ravindu Sigera (2/35). 

In reply, the visitors also struggled with the bat as they ended the  first day’s play at 92 for 7.  Royal spinners Prashan Kalhara and Gishan Balasooriya bowled will in tandem picking up 2 wickets each.

Ryan Fernando continued his stunning form with the bat as he scored a masterful century for S. Thomas College helping his team to put on a respectable total for the first innings against St. Peter’s College in their traditional encounter which commenced today at Mount Lavinia. 

Fernando made 103 runs off 153 balls with 15 fours as the hosts made 229 for 7 before declaring the innings in the 80th over. 

The visitors had to bat 12 overs before the end of the  first day’s play. Though they managed to put on 51 runs at a healthy rate of 4.25, they also lost 2 wickets at stumps.
