A chat or a group may contain its unique most used phrase. Ours was, “Oii article msg eka danna”. It isn’t always easy to catch up with 4 individuals who have totally contrasting sleep schedules, despite being in the same time zone. “Good morning” was frequent around 6.00 p.m., and “Good night” seconds later. Nevertheless, in time, “time” became the irrelevant dimension to a story that had much to be spoken of.
It all started a year ago where the articles started flowing to the WordPress Dashboard. Professional we were as of any group we were to be, as the 5 names came up as the FOS Blog Editors for the year 2020/2021.
Pinned one chat below, “Editors 2020 – අපි 5”, followed by some weird emojis, became the most active Whatsapp group I have ever had in my life. As our lawyer always mentioned, “Offline is the new luxury”, was no longer applied to the 5 of us because we always had that innocent craving to “just edit it”.

The Lawyer
“කාලය හරිම වේගයෙන් ගෙවිලා යනවා. හිතා ගන්න බැරි තරම් වේගයකින්. FOS Media කොළඹ විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ විද්‍යා පීඨ නිල මාධ්‍ය ඒකකයේ Editor කෙනෙක් වෙලා හරියටම අවුරුද්දක් සපිරෙන දවසේ පහුගිය වසර පුරාම ලැබුණු අත්දැකීම් ගැන මතක් කරන්නට ලැබීමත් සතුටක්. එකම කණ්ඩායමක් වුණු අපි Editors ලා සියලුම දෙනාගේ සුසංයෝගය සියලු වැඩකටයුතු පිළිවෙළට සාර්ථකව කරගෙන යන්න හේතු වුණ බව ඇත්තක්. විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය, විශ්වවිද්‍යාල ජීවිතය, රටේ ලෝකෙ සිදුවීම්, දේශපාලනය, රස කෑමබීම, කලාව ගැන විවෘතව කතාබහ කරපු, එකිනෙකාගේ දුක සැප බෙදා ගත්ත, වාද විවාද කරපු, ඒත් ඕනෑම වෙලාවට එකිනෙකා වෙනුවෙන් පෙනී සිටිය, Assignments කරපු ඒ වගේ group එකක් තවත් තිබුණේ නැහැ. ඒ වගේ මිතුරු පිරිසක් FOS Media තුළින් ලබන්න අපි වාසනාවන්ත වුණා.”
“Blog පිටුවට අලුතින් Travel category එක එකතු කරන්නත්, REVELATIO තරඟාවලිය පවත්වන්න ලැබීමත් ඉතාම සතුටක් වුණා. ඕනෑම වැඩක පිළිවෙළ, සාර්ථකත්වය රඳා පවතින්නෙම කැපවීම, උත්සහය හා කණ්ඩායම් හැඟීම මත කියන කරුණ තව තවත් සනාථ කර ගන්න අපිට හැකි වුණා. දක්ෂ නිවේදකයෙක්, වැඩ සියල්ල පිළිවෙළට මතක් කරන දක්ෂ සංගීතකාරයෙක්, වලියට බර සැඟවුණු කලාකාරයෙක්, දක්ෂ ව්‍යාකරණවේදියෙක් එක්ක වැඩ කරන්න ලැබුණු මේ වසර මට නම් අත්දැකීම් රැසක් එකතු කළ වසරක්. අවසාන වශයෙන්,”

Bit innocent for a lawyer? It isn’t quite finished yet. It continues with what the chaos of any conversation had to say.
The Chaos
“The “ping” of the notification makes me look up, never fails to do so. Being one of the very few chats I open immediately, I grin as the scientist starts talking about one of “his girls”. Being the chaos in the bunch, I tag the voice in a message and question the triangle between the three. In comes the artist with an array of stickers that I’ve seen used every day. And as the chat goes on, the poet comes and adds a signature emoji and disappears off. Just another day in the conversation of five people.”
“Memories of A4 sheets and the asymmetry of Tablas, balding issues and the use of tractors, heaps of assignment answers, weirdly timely and appropriate emojis and literary debates, the funniest conversations came out of the most serious moments. And with each day, I saw us becoming not five separate entities working together for a common goal, but one common entity working together for each one’s goals.”
“We argued with and for each other, we laughed at and with each other. We supported and stood with each other. We learned through our slips and joked through our struggles. You may see us as what you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient of definitions, but together, we found out that each one of us is a scientist, a voice, a poet, an artist, and chaos. We came together as titled editors, and we stay together as best friends.”

Yep! I know you find that weirdly confusing. Even Grammarly finds it hard to understand. A complex dictionary, yet a genuine one.
The Poet
“අප්පට සිරි ගජ. මෙහෙමයි සීන් එක මචං… මට ලියන්න ගත්තොත් දෙසිය පනහකින්වත් නතර කරන්න බැරි බොහොම බැරෑරුම් සීන් එකක්. මොකද පහුගිය කාලය පුරාවට මං හිනා උනා නම් හිනා උනෙ මෙතන. මැසේජ් කළා නම් මැසේජ් කළෙ මෙතන. විද්‍යාව, තාක්ෂණය, කලාව, සාහිත්‍යය, චාරිකා හැම දෙයක්ම. කොටින්ම කීවොත් මේ ඇවිදින් විශ්ව ගවේෂණයක්. රට ලෝකය සමාජය දැක්කෙ මෙතන. කොටින්ම කීවොත් මේ තවත් ගෲප් එකක් නෙමෙයි. මේ තමයි මගෙ ජීවිතය.”

But it didn’t stretch to 250! A true enthusiasm in our mother tongue and this is his longest message we had ever encountered in this group.
As of any micro-community, there lies a neutralizing agent, the balance for the uncontrolled chaos: “The Calm Boy”, adds the final touchups.

“පොඩි කාලේ ඉඳන් තිබුණ මගේ ලියන, කියවන, රසවිඳින පුරුද්දට විශ්වවිද්‍යාලය ඇතුළෙ හොඳම ඉඩකඩ විවර කරලා දුන්න තැන තමයි, FOS Media Students’ Blog එක. ආසාවෙන් කියවන්න පුළුවන් වගේ ම දැනුමට එකතු කර ගන්න පුළුවන් Articles සෑහෙන ප්‍රමාණයකින් පොහොසත් අපේ FOS Blog එකේ, Author කෙනෙක් වගේ ම Editor කෙනෙක් වෙන්නත් ලැබීම මං ජීවිතේ ලබපු ලොකු භාග්‍යයක්. එයින් ලබපු අත්දැකීම් වචනවලට පෙරළුවොත් පිටු ගාණක් උනත් ලියන්න බැරි නැහැ.”

“මෙතැන අපි පස් දෙනෙක්. හැබැයි අපි එක්ක තවත් ලොකු පිරිසක් හිටියා. හැමෝට ම එක අරමුණක්. හැමෝගෙ ම ලොකු එකමුතුවක්. ඔවුන්ගෙන් ලබපු ඔවදන්, අදහස්, සහායන් සියල්ල අපට මහමෙරක්. ඔවුන් නො වන්නට අපේ කාර්යය හුදු හිස්තැන් ගොඩක් පමණක් ම වන්නටත් ඉඩ තිබුණු බව නොරහසක්. මේ මොහොතේ ඒ සැවොම සිහි කරන්නේ හදෙහි නැගෙන මහත් වූ ගෞරවයෙන්!”

Sometimes most endings are just new beginnings. We are just a nuclear family of 5 members, of the biggest extended family we ever had in our University Life, FOS Media. It is out of the question that the FOS Media Students’ Blog had given us the fruit which we nurtured, improving our skillset to a level we could have never imagined in a day like this a year ago. But moreover, it gave us 365 days of never-ending love, friendship, commitment, knowledge, and an unlimited limit of 700 characters per day.
