The post named ‘Director of Cricket’ did not exist previously in the franchise but with the experienced Sangakkara at the helm and a young and exciting captain in Sanju Samson, Royals would look for a turnaround in their fortunes in the next season.

In his support role, this season Sangakkara will be assisted by coach Andrew McDonald and Brand ambassador Shane Warne in the upcoming season. Sangakkara’s first assignment will be the upcoming mini-auction for RR where they are allowed to select best players for the franchise.

Sangakkara is also currently acting as the president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for the second year. The disruption to the global cricketing landscape caused by the outbreak of Covid-19 Coronavirus has led the Club Committee to recommend that Sangakkara, who began his term of office on 1 October 2019, be invited to serve as President of the Club until 30 September 2021.

He was also appointed as the Mentor for Team Abu Dhabi for the fourth season of Abu Dhabi T10 league which will commence on 28th January.
