Sri Lanka did very well during the initial wave of Covid-19, earlier this year. Contact tracing and quarantine was very well managed. There was island wide curfew to prevent communal spread. After May, when curfew was lifted and life returned to the new normal, the citizens were very careful to maintain Social distancing & Sanitization. We even had elections and the majority of the citizens actually showed up to vote.
Little by little, social distancing and sanitization left through the back door. Gatherings took place and everyone was happy travelling all over the island and getting on with life like nobody’s business. Eventually, at least one in five were not wearing masks in public spaces and most were not keeping an arm’s length with each other. I visited a hospital and noticed that even some children were in in their masks. (these are purely my observations). I thought to myself “Brace yourself for the next wave”.
Come end of September, new cases were identified, they were highly stigmatized and Covid-19 just went on a rampant, cruising away to different geographical locations in a matter of days and weeks. We are now in end of October, and I wonder why we still hold on to the “Cluster” mindset and not realize ” Hey! it’s out there in the community”.
I came across this very interesting article below on Daily Mirror and it speak for itself in volumes
Let’s accept the fact that the truth is out there!
