I’ve hosted two successful suppers now at my underground restaurant with a third coming up later this month. Despite the title, this dinner has really nothing to do with religion or religious holidays, and everything to do with good eating. The story behind it is simple: Christmas day is usually the one day of the year that most stores and restaurants are closed. That’s because most people who celebrate Christmas are enjoying this annual holiday meal with friends and family. But what about people who don’t celebrate Christmas? They are left to fend for themselves. So many of my Jewish friends have created another tradition that they maintain for Christmas dinner–Chinese food. Why Chinese? Because most Chinese restaurants are open that night of the year when everything else is closed.
My Jewish Christmas dinner is not on Christmas day, but on Thursday, December 21st. Instead of simply serving Chinese food we are going to up the ante and feature an all-Sichuan menu. Sichuan Province in southwest China is home to many of my favorite dishes, which are usually heavy on the chilies, so this dinner is my homage to Sichuan cuisine.
