sundews- childhood memories

29 Mar

Drosera- (commonly known as – sundews) is a small plant more like a flower attached to the soil. It is a carnivorous plant and you can see one or two insects struggling for their lives or dead ones buried half in sticky secretions of its leaves. It can be seen in various colors ranging from light green to shades of red. It has thin spoon like leaves round in the edge.

It was a wonder when I was a kid. We had few plants in our front garden. Actually I didn’t know about it at that time. First I thought it was a nice plant. So I decided to plant some in a pot. But it didn’t grow well in the pot but it helped me to make the great discovery. I think you can understand what an enjoyment and an adventurous feeling it gave to me as soon as I understood this small plant could catch insects.

I was initially afraid of it because I had a sudden feeling that this would grow bigger and bigger and engulf us. So I observed it day by day.

I was in a hurry to tell this to my school mates.

When my school mates visited my house I showed the plants to them proudly. They were too curious about those. I still can remember their faces.

We were kids then. No responsibilities, no worries – light as feathers which float around. When I think about the past – about my childhood, memories wrapped around those small plants comes to my mind. I can remember how we went on searching for them in our garden and still our shouts echoes in my ears. We felt our garden as so big those days.

Things have changed a lot. When I go home (after a long time) I walk in the garden- now filled with different types of flowers. I know there are no sundews remaining. But in my mind I hear the cheerful sounds of a group of kids and see their steps in the sand.

I think about life. How the things which bring happiness change with age and with time.
