As posson poya is about to dawn in a few days time, I felt that posting an article about an ancient Buddhist site which I recently visited would be appropriate. It was a day outing and was organized by the Abimansala –Anuradhapura with the aim of changing the monotonous of totally dependent war heroes. The day outing was planned to visit a historical Buddhist dagaba situated in an area which was under the clutches of Tamil terrorist for more than thirty years. The Dagaba is known as Girihadu Seya and it is considered as the first Dagaba in Sri Lanka. It is located in Thiriyaya close to TrincomaleePulmoddai road.
After the Buddha spent seven weeks (Sath Sathiya), the two merchants –Thapassu and Balluka — who are brothers offered alms to him and asked for sacred relics to be enshrined in a Dagaba. The Buddha gave them a lock of hair as sacred relics (Sacred Kesha Datu). History says that the two merchants traveled to Trincomalee and built
The Girihadu Seya where they enshrined these sacred relics.
After the terrorist activities began in that area Buddhist were forced to move out from the area abandoning the Dagaba. Hence, it is now in a dilapidated condition. However, through the valiant effort and great sacrifices done by our brave soldiers, the Tamil terrorism was completely wiped out from our nation. Thus Girihadu seya also has once again become a Buddhist pilgrimage site for all of us.
