Sri Lanka & USA win Mini World Cup

USA defeated Germany 1-0 in the Boys’ category while Sri Lanka defeated Norway 5-1 in the Girls’ category to win the German Embassy Mini World Cup with TAFA tournament at the Race Course International Stadium.

4 girls’ and 4 boys’ teams participated from Jaffna, Gampaha, Negombo and Colombo areas. The teams were supported by the Embassies of Switzerland, Norway, Netherlands, Brazil, France & USA and each team represented its sponsoring country in the tournament. The tournament was conducted in the U16 category.

Football Mini World Cup at Race Course

The German Embassy along with Thaabit Ahmed Football Academy (TAFA) will stage the first ‘Mini Football World Cup’ at the Race Course International Stadium on 20th May.

In the boys’ category USA, France, Germany and Netherlands were represented by teams from Jaffna, Negombo, Colombo and Gampaha respectively. In the girls’ category Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Norway were represented by teams from Colombo, Jaffna, Negombo and Gampaha respectively.

In the girls’ final Sri Lanka thrashed Norway 5-1 to win the tournament. The Jaffna girls’ who represented Sri Lanka had a storming campaign in which they scored 18 goals and only conceded 3 in the four matches they played.

Paskaran Sanu of Sri Lanka was adjudged the ‘Best Player’ while Jekatesuran Jetuniska also from Sri Lanka won the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ award.

USA edged out Germany 1-0 to win the boys’ final. Like in the girls’ category it was the Jaffna boys’ representing USA who took away the glory.

Srikanth Tharsikan of USA was the ‘Best Player’ in the boys’ category and Mohamed Nushkan from Germany won the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ award.
