Royal and Ladies shine at the Head of the Beira regatta

The Head of the Beira regatta concluded on Saturday, the 25th of March 2017 at the Colombo Rowing Club. Royal College and Ladies College won a majority of the races in their respective categories.

The regatta was an endurance test for both men and women as the races were 2 miles long. The regatta was based on timings and the crew that clocked the best time were winners. The regatta was held under single sculls, double sculls and coxed fours.

The men’s category comprised of crews from Royal College, S. Thomas’ College, Gateway College, Colombo Rowing Club, University of Moratuwa and the University of Colombo. In the single sculls event, Hashen Hettigoda of Royal College emerged victorious with an impressive timing of 13 minutes and 52 seconds. Coming in second was Arjun Wickramanayake of S. Thomas’ College with a timing of 14 minutes and 13 seconds.

In the men’s double sculls, Royal College came first with Waruna Hewamanne and Jatu Rockwood with a timing of 13 minutes and 16 seconds. In the coxed fours, Ranjan Balasooriya, Damien, Rasika Bandara, Dilanka Gamage and Nipuna Lihinikaduwa of the University of Moratuwa emerged victorious with a timing of 12 minutes and 58 seconds followed by Royal College with a timing of 13 minutes and 6 seconds.

The women’s single sculls saw Samaakhya Gajanayake coming in first place with a timing of 16 minutes and 8 seconds. Nihara Warawita and Davina Koch of Ladies College took away the double sculls race in the women’s category with a timing of 15 minutes and 8 seconds. Ladies College yet again won the coxed fours event through Ishara Abbey, Davina Koch, Nihara Warawita, Ashvini Subasinghe and cox Thiranya Abeyaratne with a timing of 14 minutes and 33 seconds. Traditional rival Musaeus College followed in second place with a timing of14 minutes and 46 seconds.

All-in-all, the regatta concluded successfully with the awarding ceremony following the races!
