From upsets to record breaking scores, the first week of Schools Rugby took the island by storm. The first six matches of the league brought back the flair of exciting rugby with several high scoring games as well as some close encounters.

1 Avantha Lee’s blitz

Wesley’s Avantha Lee started his final stint in his double blue jersey with a breath-taking try, breaking free from the Trinity defense for a classic finish.

2 First win for Zahira in 14 years

Entering the first league after a long lapse of 14 years, Zahira were successful in recording a win in their very first week in the competition. Expectations of 14 years were transformed to tears of joy as Zahira defeated Science 13 – 19

3 Peter’s survived the circling Eagles at Bambalapitiya

After leading 24-15 at lemons, the Bamba brigade had to tighten their lines to prevent the Antonians from taking home the Rector’s trophy.

4 Dennister lead the Zam Zam Zake from the forefront

Leading the Double Blues for 2017, skipper Dennister Goonetilake set the tone for the team warding off the Trinity three-quarters to score.

5 The power of a ward-off

Josephian front row Hashen Salgado fends off his Royal counterpart as he tries to make some distance for his team. The encounter however ended in favour of Royal 28-22 at Reid Avenue.

6 Rajan Airborne

Dharmaraja captain Chamika Perera dives for the corner as Isipathana’s Randy Silva looks by on a soggy Bogambora outfield. Isipathana ended up victorious after a strong second half

7 The unstoppable Boyagoda

Trinity’s Anuka Boyagoda was unstoppable with the ball at Longdon Place last week, scripting Trinity’s high scoring win against Welsey.

8 The euphoria of a win!

What better way to celebrate your team’s win other than with your team mates. Victorious scenes at Ratmalana as the enthusiastic fans went wild after the final whistle.
