Torrential rain and waterlogged pitch at the Kelaniya Football Complex forced officials to postpone the second half proceedings of the title contenders’ clash between Blue Star SC and Colombo FC with the former leading 1-0 at half time.

Blue Star led through an early goal from Mohamed Farzeen in this Dialog Champions League Super 8 Week 6 encounter.

Both teams were victorious last week where Blue Star overcame a brave Solid SC outfit by 2-0 and Colombo FC weathered a late Navy SC onslaught to win 3-1.

Blue Star scrape win over brave Solid

Blue Star were made to work hard for 3 points against a makeshift Solid SC as they sealed an important 2-0 win at the Kelaniya Football Complex…

The game was very physical straight from kick off and it didn’t take long for Blue Star’s Idowu Hameed to get the first booking of the day for a crunching tackle on Zarwan Johar.

Former Blue Star skipper Mohamed Rameez almost got the first one in for Colombo FC through a towering header from a corner but unfortunately his effort was cleared away. The header was going in when a Blue Star defender got a head to it to deflect it to the crossbar before being cleared away.

But it was Blue Star who found the back of the net first when Afonja Jibola’s cross from the right wing found an open Mohamed Farzeen who easily slotted the ball into the goal from close range, making it 1-0.

Encouraged by the goal, Blue Star increased their attack with E.B.Channa, Jibola and Farzeen wreaking havoc through the Colombo defence. They nearly got another one in through Hameed off a Channa corner, but goalkeeper Mohamed Imran got a hand to it and it bounced off the uprights for a corner.

Colombo weathers Navy and rain to win

Three first half goals enabled defending champions Colombo FC hold off a resurgent Navy SC amidst torrential rain in the 2nd half to bag all three points…

With the crowd support coming in, Colombo FC changed gears and also started bringing up attacking plays with some great passes orchestrated by Zarwan Johar Rawme Mohideen and Afeez Olayemi.

Zarwan was unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a marginal offside, after Afeez dispossed Mohamed Rifkhan to set up the forward.

Nearing the end of the first half heavens opened up and though it was not heavy it made life difficult for the players.
