St. Peter’s College v St. Sebastian’s College

After winning the toss on a greenish surface St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa opted to bat first. The decision soon backfired on the visiting side, as the host’s, led by ace speedster Santhush Gunathilake and Shivan Perera, ran riot through a hapless St.Sebastian’s batting line-up which is lacking the services of Mishen Silva, Praveen Jayawickrama and Skipper Avishka Fernando who are touring South Africa on National duty. The Peterites wasted little time wrapping things up as St. Sebastian’s folded for a dismal 79 all out.

In response the Peterites had a rather shaky start losing 3 early wickets. However the experienced skipper and former Sri Lanka U19 cap Lakshina Rodrigo together with Shalitha Fernando put up a staggering 200 run partnership to take the game away from the Moratuwa lads. Despite Shalitha missing out on a much deserved hundred, skipper Lakshina Rodrigo notched up his first century for the season. The Peterites ended in a commanding position at 289/6 with a handsome lead in excess of 200.

In the 120th traditional encounter between the two schools, Royal College, Colombo were given first lease of the wicket after losing the toss. Helitha Vithanage lead from the front as he racked up an impressive century to carry his team to an impressive 291/9 declared. The Josephians in response put up a stellar batting performance as they ended day 1 on 105/1 with Cameron Duruge and Nipun Samarasinge in an unbeaten partnership of 67.

Winnings the toss, the Thomians decided to bat first and cashed in on a flat track in yet another traditional encounter against Ananda College, Colombo. Led by an impressive 85 by Thisara Hapuvinna and ably supported by Romesh Nallpperuma and Anura Bulankulama, the hosts managed to put up a respectable 287/9 declared. Dileepa Jayalath led the charge for the visitors with the ball as he bagged a crafty 4/49. The Anandians in their response had little time in the middle as they managed 28/1 come the end of day 1.

De Mazenod were dominated by Maris Stella College on day 1 after being put into bat first by the visitors in a group D encounter. Sangeeth Deshan proved to be the lone ranger for the hosts with a fighting 63 while the rest of the batting collapsed around him. Pasindu Ushetti bagged yet another 5 for as he ended with figures of 5/74 wrapping up the Mazenodian innings for a mere 195.

In response, Maris Stella carried their momentum into their batting effort as they ended day 1 strongly at 193/3 just two runs short of first innings honors with ace all-rounder Lasith Crossepulle top scoring with 81 closely followed by an unbeaten Ashan Fernando on 78.

Gurukula College v Zahira College

Gurukula College bounced back in style against Zahira College Colombo after a dismal batting performance by the former. Batting first, Gurukula College were humbled for a mediocre 132 all out as Mohomed Hashmi bagged a staggering 8/20 for the hosts. Malindu Viduranga top scored for the visitors with 71 in depleting Gurukula batting effort.

In response, Zahira were tottering themselves as they ended day one at a humbling 105/9 with Malindu Viduranga bagging 3 scalps to round off an impressive batting performance earlier in the day.
