Charana and Yeshan put Thurstan in control

Thurstan College, Colombo dominated the opening day of the Singer-cup traditional game against Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa which began today at Thurstan grounds.

Hard hitting all-rounder Charana Nanayakkara made a classy half-ton as Thurstan College posted 171 in their first innings after being put in to bat by the Cambrian skipper. Left-arm spinner Kaumal Nanayakkara completed a 5-for together with Thilan Nimesh who chipped in 4 wickets for the visitors.

In response the Cambrians were dismantle by the Thurstanite bowlers as they ended the day on 77 for 9 wickets. Right- arm seamer Yeshan Wickramarachchi bamboozled Cambrian batting line up with 4 wickets while Sawan Prabash grabbed 3 wickets for the home team.

Sandun Fernando remained unbeaten on 40 runs for the visitors at stumps.

President’s College, Kotte vs St. Joseph’s Vaz College, Wennappuwa

St. Joseph’s Vaz College finished strong in the opening day of the of the group D encounter against President’s College, Kotte which started today at the Albert. F. Peiris grounds.

President’s College decided to bat first as they lasted only 23.5 overs for a below par 109. Chamod Wickramasuriya scored 60 vital runs while Sohan Anuradda claimed 3 wickets for the hosts.

In reply the lads from Wennappuwa helped themselves to a strong first innings total as they racked up 278 thanks to Arjana Rukmal and Neranjan Rodrigo as both stroked half-tons for the home team while Sashika Liyanage grabbed a 4 scalps for the visitors.

The visitors lost a wicket in the second innings at stumps as they made 10 runs in two overs.

Wesley College, Colombo vs Mahinda College, Galle

Mahinda College, Galle placed slightly ahead in their group B game against Wesley College, Colombo which started today at Campbell Park.

The home team won the toss and batted first as they crumbled for 138 runs inside 58 overs. Thisuraka Akmeemana together with Hasith Perera made useful 30s, while fast bowler Pramith Hansika and off spinner Kavindu Ediriweera shared seven wickets for the visitors.

In reply Pasan Ranmal stroked 29 runs for the visitors as they ended the day on 79 for 4 wickets.

Richmond College, Galle took major honours against St. Anthony’s College, Wattala in their group A game which began today at Mahinda Rajapaksha International grounds.

St. Anthony’s College, Wattala were wrapped up for a modest 156 in 79 overs as Avishka Tharindu top scored with 54 runs, while right-arm quick Thilanga Udeshana took 4 scalps together with Dananjaya Lakshan who chipped in with a 3 wicket haul.

In reply the lads from Galle were 43 for no loss at stumps.
