77th Wrestling Nationals

77th Wrestling national championship will take place will be held from the 01st to the 03rd December at the Sports Ministry indoor stadium.

Wrestling was one of the three initial sports at Olympics and is a sport that uses core movements that even an infant uses during the birth. Wrestlers have been held in high regard in the ancient civilizations where it was a mandatory skill that the warriors and the Nobel men had to perfect.

There has been a revival in local wrestling and this was evident when they won 5 Silver medals and 7 Bronze medals at the recently concluded SAARC Games where only athletics and swimming had better medal tallies. Sri Lankan wrestler Chamara Perera  from Sri Lanka Navy was impressive at the  concluded commonwealth wrestling championship in Scotland and narrowly missed out on a Silver medal. Silva was unlucky to have missed out on wild card for the Rio Olympics.

This year’s National championship will see over 200 participants wrestle for glory in three separate divisions in Men’s, Women’s and junior categories.  Both Men’s and Women’s will be competed in 08 different weight categories while the juniors will compete in 10 different weight categories.

David Peiris Motor Company limited will be powering the Wrestling nationals for the first time this year and will hold event under the name “Pulsar Power Wrestling Championship 2016” endorsing the Bajaj Pulsar the best-selling sports premium bike in the Island.
