Sidu/ Mali 3 2016 review (with background information on other seasons)

Hello guys J I am back with review of a drama which you guys really need to watch. Of course that is only if you guys haven’t watched it alreadyJ.  So the whole of Sri Lanka is down with Sidu fever. It has become a household name and every bloody cat on planet Earth is a Sarana (the drama’s cat actorJ ) to the Sri Lankans. It has come to this point where every kid and every parent is glued to TV Derana exactly at 7.30 pm every week day. Forget those crappy Indian Soap Operas; forget those 6.30 Rupavahini dramas or even KDramas because here we are talking about a drama which took Sri Lanka by a storm.

Ape Sarana:)

The drama itself is a sequel to Mali 1 & 2 where we met a family who were born with the ability to control magic and use it for the betterment of society. So let us introduce our selves to this TV series before we go any further. So both Mali 1 and Mali 2 were commercially successful and so bloody popular.

The first season focuses on Dingiri Amma and her daughter Mali. Both these characters were highly talented in the field of magic and had the ability to cure people as well as defend them. The plot revolved around Mali and her love story with the doctor from Colombo, Nirmal. They had to face a lot of life threatening obstacles and Dingiri Amma was always behind them. The stories arch villain was Ukuwa and we see Mali and Dingiri Amma joining forces to destroy him and his black magic. In the end Mali gives birth to a baby girl, however according to her horoscope Mali should never see the child’s face or be near her because it will be bad on the child’s future. So Mali’s cousin sister also acts like she is pregnant and the baby is left in her care. The story ends with Mali going to England with Nirmal and Dingiri Amma promising to look after the little girl.

Okay so I wasn’t able to watch Mali Season 2 fully so I don’t remember the names (sorry about that.). Mali Season 2 comes with the title Athamma meaning Grandmother. Its plot revolves around Mali’s daughter who now lives with her grandmother. This story follows Mali’s daughter, a powerful magician from her childhood to her 20’s (till she falls in love). The drama was sweet as well as a nail biter. In this drama an evil spirit who looks exactly like Dingiri Amma is the arch enemy and the drama ends on a happy note.

Mali's Husband/Sidu's dad - Nirmal

(All these dramas are available to watch online and at the moment Mali season 2 is shown on TV Derana in the mornings).

Mali season 3 or as it is better known Sidu follows the story of Mali’s son who comes to Sri Lanka after Dingiri Amma’s death. He is a little boy of just 8 years and is far more powerful than Mali herself. However the little guy is hiding all this power from his own mother. The arch enemy in this drama is Ukuwa who is now an evil spirit. He wants this little child to grow older and become more powerful so that he can take the power from the child and regain a human body. The kid’s name is Sidu and soon after he arrives in Sri Lanka Nandipala (Ukuwa’s son) kidnaps him. After kidnapping Sidu, Ukuwa uses black magic to erase Sidu’s memories. So Sidu is then taken to Kurunagala by Nandipala where he is brought up as Nandipala’s nephew - Malitha.

Malitha/Sidu

It is in this little village in Kurunagala where we find the little monk Soratha and his pet cat Sarana. Soratha sadhu is a mere child of about 5 to 6 years who is just simply lovable. He is cute, intelligent and very naughty. He is Malitha’s best friend and partner in crime. Sarana is the little cat who is so naughty and yet is loved by all Sri Lankans. He is so famous that he is constantly mentioned even in Sri Lankan politics. If you walk around Colombo these days you are sure to find at least a half a dozen of three-wheelers which have famous lines from this drama stuck up on them.

Nandipala

So Mali 3 is all about children and their innocent childhoods. However a love story is blooming between Mali’s younger daughter and Nirmal’s friend’s son and I believe it will be a happy one. Malitha at the moment is using his power well but he cannot remember who he is or where he is from. The temple’s chief monk is quite surprised by the fact that Malitha can read and write English well, as well as his enormous power.

I believe it is not for long that Malitha will be hidden away as the Chief Monk is having doubts as to who Nandipala real is. Malitha did remember/see his mother briefly when Soratha sadhu takes off the “magic necklace” around Malitha’s neck for a little time.

Malitha has already made some very good friends at the village. His newest friend is a little girl call Hiruni who is the daughter of the owner of the coconut plantation Malitha is at. She is suffering from an illness where she can’t go out in the sunlight because it burns her skin. The illness itself is kept hidden from her and she is only allowed to go outside after 5.30pm when there is no sunlight. Malitha’s latest plan is to get little Hiruni cured. I personally believe that Malitha would cure the little girl from her illness. If the drama does go on till Malitha grows up then Hiruni could even be his love interest.

However I hope TV Derana keeps the small children theme because it is just beautiful that way. I mean Sri Lankan television is full of Indian dramas which have teenage pregnancies, child marriage and other highly adulterated themes. However Sidu is just a drama on children’s innocence. It is a drama I would allow my younger siblings to watch. I don’t have to change channels when there are scenes with sexual tension because Sidu has no such themes. In plain words I just love Sidu and hope Derana keeps up showing such great dramas and I also want to see a continuation of the Mali series.
So overall this drama is a must watch and I highly recommend it to you guys. While you would enjoy the innocence of small children, you will learn more about Buddhism and on our very own Sri Lankan culture. Hats off Derana for this epic drama and hope you guys keep up this high standards.

Thus we end another review and hope you enjoyed it. Please take account that some of the names mentioned above maybe wrong. This is simply because it is a long time since I have watched Mali 1 or 2 and I also have this bad habit of naming actors after characters they acted as. Due to this Kavinga Perera is always Akila to me and Saranga is Aditya. If you guys do know the right names and more about Mali 1 and 2 please email me at srilankacricket77@gmail.com. Just don’t comment below because there is a problem on my blog where I cannot read comments. So keep tuned into Drama Queen to know the latest on Sri Lankan’s TV drama mania. J J J J J
