Thomians denied an outright victory; Rain affects matches in Colombo

Here’s a brief look into a few matches which took place today in the Singer U19 Division I cricket tournament. 

St. Sylvester’s College VS Mahanama College

St Sylvester’s were in huge trouble when rain brought a premature end to first days play in their match against Mahanama College. They won the toss and elected to bat first and were in huge trouble at 69 for 5 when rain stopped play. Manuja Perera was unbeaten on 42 while Niduka Welikala took 3 wickets for 25 for Mahanama.

Lumbini College VS Anuradhapura MMV 

Maduranga Chandraratna’s five-for gave the upper hand to Anuradhapura MMV on day one of their match against Lumbini College. Anuradhapura MMV won the toss and opted to bowl first given the overcast conditions in Colombo. Lumbini could only manage a 186 for their first innings. Vinu Hemal and Ravindu Sanjeewa chipped in with 33 and 31 respectively while Maduranga picked up five wickets for 50 runs.

When rain intervened, Anuradhapura MMV was 17 for no loss in 9 overs.

Moratu Vidyalaya VS S. Thomas’ College

Thomians were denied of an outright victory as rain affected 2nd day’s play of this group C encounter between S. Thomas’ College and Moratu Vidyalaya. The Thomians resumed play on the second day with 98 on board and seven wickets in hand. They added 56 runs more to their total and declared their innings at 154 for 6 in 45.3 overs.

With a 93 run deficit against them Moratu Vidyalaya had their back against the wall. They somehow managed to fight their way to 177 all out in 68.3 overs. Dellon Peiris stood out yet again for the Thomians with a five-for to go with his 6 wickets in the first innings. With 20 overs left in the game the Thomians were given a target of 85 runs, but they could only get 36 runs in 4.2 overs when rain stopped play. However S. Thomas’ secured much needed first innings points from the match.
