Police SC would be looking to put a horror season (2015/16) behind them and prove all doubters wrong as they aim to make their mark in the upcoming (2016/17) season of the Dialog Rugby League.
Recent past
Police SC began the past season (2015/16) as title contenders but in a season that saw many players ruled out due to injuries and the inconsistent form of key players meant that Police SC had to settle for 5th place in the overall standings.
They looked to be heading in the right direction with the recruitment of national players in the likes of Rizah Mubarak, Achala Perera, Terence Henry, Sharo Fernando, Chamara Dabare and Bilal Hassen but it did not pay off well for the cops.
The great wall of Police SC in defense and the standout player last season was the Centre Mushin Faleel as he stood firm in an otherwise ordinary Police side. Mushin was a wall in defence and the penetrator in attack as he soldiered ahead almost as a lone warrior for the Cops.
As results went south, the recruitment policy came crashing down on Police SC resulting in many big name players leaving for the upcoming (2016/17) season.
The Squad
Experienced heads
Experienced Hooker Achala Perera will be the lynchpin of the forwards pack, exerting his power and making his presence felt in the middle of the scrum. Standing at 5 feet and 6 inches and 106 kilograms, Achala will look to make his presence felt, literally.
Radeesha Senevirathna, this time a back row forward standing at a little over 5 5” and 82KGs, the combative forward will look to make his presence felt, particularly at the break down. Having the ability to slot into any position in the back row would be an added advantage as Radeesha would be looking to better his performance from last season.
Abzal Mohamed springs into mind as we switch our attention to the back line of Police SC. The fleet footed utility back can fit in anywhere from Scrum Half to Fullback. Having played mainly in the Scrum Half position, Abzal would look to make a noteworthy contribution this time around.
Finally the Wall of the Police defence from last season, Mushin Faleel will look to add to his breakthrough season (15/16) and even make a push towards the National fold. Having the ability to slot in at inside or outside Centre, Mushin would look to make full use of his power and agile game.
Young Blood
Having had an average school season last time around, Sandesh Jayawickrama would look to make a name for himself under his old coach Rajeev Perera. Sandesh would look to direct traffic as he hopes to make a smooth slot in at the all-important Fly Half position.
Taking his school into the A division for the 2017 school season, Wajid Fawmy from Zahira College will look to take his exceptional form into the club rugby arena. Having featured prominently in the Flanker position, Wajid would look to make his defensive ability help him book a place in the first XV team.
Back Room Staff
Having taken over at the helm of Police Rugby, Coach Sudath Sampath will be looking to heal the wounds caused from last season as he looks to put Police Rugby at ease. Police managed just 8 wins in the whole of last season (League and Knockouts inclusive) but Coach Sudath will be looking to make changes in the system and better that number this time around.
Rajeev Perera, former Peterite coach joins the coaching setup of Police Rugby. Rajeev brings in a wealth of expertise along with him from the past coaching assignments he has had and as he along with head Coach Sudath would look to hit the ground running when Police takes on Navy in the season opener.
Chamika Ranasinghe will be the manager as Manuka Gunarathne assists in the treatment room of Police rugby.
Prospects for 2016/17: Ending in the middle of the table resulted in the loss of many big named players and it will a mighty task for Police to finish in the top four this time around but it would be a challenge they will be looking to meet head on.
