Bandara strikes double ton; Lakshan top scores in rain-affected game

Sri Lanka U19 cap, Ashen Bandara struck a magnificent double century as St. Aloysius College’ Galle managed a first innings win in their Singer U19 Cricket Tournament 2016/17 game against Anuradhapura Central College. Opening batsman, Dhananjaya Lakshan top scored for Richmond College as they took the initiative at the end of day one in a rain affected game at Reid Avenue against Royal College.

Anuradhapura Central v St. Aloysius College

Batting first, Anuradhapura Central were restricted to just 186 as left-arm spinner, Hareen Buddhila bamboozled the Anuradhapura Central lads with his left arm spin bagging 6 for 70 at Galle International Stadium in their Singer Cup ‘Group C’ encounter. Niduka Malshith also pitched in with 3 for 24 for the boys from Galle.

Lahiru Liyanage (54) and Heshan Senira (43) were the only pair of batsmen to make a telling contribution toward the Anuradhapura boys score.

In reply, St. Aloysius’ made a mammoth 355 for the loss of just 3 wickets. Right hander Ashen Bandara was the outstanding batsman as he scored a magnificent 200 not out. Captain Navindu Nirmal led by example as he provided vital support with a century of his own (105).

Trailing by 169, Anuradhapura Central were 31 for the loss of 2 wickets as the game ended handing St. Aloysius’ a first innings win.

Left-arm spinner Hareen Buddhila became the first schoolboy to pass the 50-wicket milestone this season. He has bagged 55 wickets in 7 games so far this season.

Richmond v Royal

Richmond College took the initiative at the end of day scoring 189 for the loss of 3 wickets. The game began after lunch as a wet outfield hampered an early start even though there was no rain in the early hours of the morning.

After being sent into bat, Dananjaya Lakshan top scored for the visitors with a classy 61 off 81 balls. Lakshan’s opening partner, Chamikara Hewage provided vital support with 33 during their 98-run opening stand. Captain Kamindu Mendis scored an unbeaten 45 to go into stumps at the end of day one. Play will continue for day two tomorrow (20 October).

Off-spinner Ganith Sandeepa picked up 2 wickets for the hosts.
