16-year old Umesh Lakshan Kurera of St. Peter’s College, Negombo recorded a magnificent double century in the ‘Singer Trophy’ under 19 division 2 encounter against Tissa Central College Kalutara last week at Dalupotha.

Despite Kurera’s phenomenal effort, St. Peter’s College, Negombo lost the match by 7 wickets. Right-handed Kurera came to the crease when the Peterites were 4 down. He clobbered 20 sixes and 22 boundaries during his excellent 148-ball 235.

Playing his third year for the College team, Kurera hopes to bring glory to his alma mater and his country. “I want to represent Sri Lanka one-day. I am extremely pleased with my effort and I hope to consistently perform to my team’s cause.” Kurera said exclusively to ThePapare.com.

Kurera who is turning 17 next month can play 1st XI cricket for two more years. Incidentally this is not Kurera’s first double-century; he scored a terrific 200 against Sri Pangnananda MV Raddoluwa in a U17 match last year.

Under the leadership of tall and lanky right-arm off-spinner, Nishan Peiris, St. Peter’s College won the under 19 division 3 title last season which promoted them to play in the division 2 this season.

Peiris is currently in the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team training squad for the upcoming West Indies ‘A’ series. Sri Lanka’s newest fast-bowling all-rounder, Dasun Shanaka also started his cricketing journey at St. Peter’s College, Negombo.
