Colombo International School – Kandy steals the win against Royal Institute – Colombo

Royal Institute Colombo went head to head with Colombo International School Kandy in their respective group fixture in the boys` segment of the inter-international basketball tournament 2016. This match gave way to a gutsy comeback by CISK, and some crucial mistakes made by RI in the dying minutes. CISK won after having trailed for over three quarters of the game.

It was an evenly balanced first quarter. Royal Institute stuck to driving hard at the basket, drawing fouls. CISK had a clear height advantage, but failed to make rebounds count thus missing out on second chances. RIC led the first quarter 14-10.

RIC had trouble guarding the driving lanes. They could not fend off the player driving in, due to the height mismatch and as a result committed too many fouls. CISK capitalized on this error. In terms of offense, RIC ranged from scoring off three pointers and driving the lanes. CISK stuck to scoring points off the paint.

CISK improved on defense after lemons. They managed to cut off RI’s offense in the early moments of the third quarter. However, towards the latter part of the quarter, CISK displayed foul trouble; giving off free opportunities for RI to increase their lead. RIC led 37-46, at the end of the third period.

The last ten minutes was a well contested tussle and proved to be a shocker for the crowd. CISK put on tremendous pressure on their counterparts and were catching up on the deficit. With about five minutes left in the quarter; the scores were tied 50-50, RIC unable to hold on to their lead. Towards, the last few minutes; CISK stuck to their basics, making full use of turnovers to score points. RIC were put under tremendous pressure, and lost possession on countless occasions.

Colombo International School – Colombo deal in three pointers

Lyceum International School, Nugegoda took on Colombo International School, Colombo in their respective group fixture in the girls` segment of the inter-international basketball tournament 2016.

Winning possession off the jump ball, CIS started off proceedings with a clean shot from downtown by Hikari Hatta. CIS opted for a well-executed zone defense early on, causing trouble for LISN. Lyceum were rather unsettled, scoring only a couple of points in the first quarter. They were rather unfocused in terms of their man to man defense; letting CIS score easy three pointers; the shooter being left wide open. CIS led 2-12 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second period, LISN settled in to their normal style of play. They scored more often, and were confident in driving at the basket and drawing fouls. However, CIS continued to deliver, further extending their lead as the first half ended.

The plot for the LISN camp continued to deteriorate in this game, as they committed too many fouls and failed to guard the open player on the arc. The CIS team continued to keep their end of the scoreboard ticking at a healthy rate, leading 19-45 at the end of the third quarter.

The crowd were treated with an intense last quarter. The girls from LISN playing their hearts out in order to catch up, and the CIS team refusing to let up despite their healthy lead. Lyceum applied a considerable amount of pressure, causing CIS to put only 5 points on the board in the last ten minutes.

Although LISN defended exceptionally well, causing many turnovers, they could not make it count on the offense. The deficit was too much to conquer, and CIS walked away with the victory.

The Head Coach of CIS, Mr. T. M. Amath had this to say after the game. “The team could have fouled too much throughout the game and had a low socring last quarter. Besides that, I’m satisfied with the team’s overall performance.”

Colombo International School fall short against Lyceum International School – Wattala

Lyceum International School, Wattala went head to head with Colombo International School, Colombo in their respective group fixture in the boys` segment of the Inter-international basketball tournament 2016.

LISW went on to score first after gaining possession off the jump ball. They opted to a zone defense against their opponents. Shivanga de Silva opened scoring for CIS; his team taking some time to settle into the game. He went onto lead the offense for his team, scoring all of CIS’s points in the first quarter. They led 15-17 after the first period.

LISW turned the tables around in the second quarter. They began putting CIS under pressure; drawing fouls and also converting second chances. CIS lacked coordination in their game, and were made to pay heavily as LISW snuck past them at halftime.

It was a neck to neck second half, Lyceum with a balanced team effort, led by Rashan and Nimesh, and a less coordinated CIS attack. It could also be argued that the CIS strategy was over reliant on Shivanga de Silva and Amandha Gunawardene. Lyceum had a healthy lead at the end of the third period; the scoreboard reading 51-39.

The overall CIS effort improved in the last quarter. They held their fort down on defense and attacked the basket exceptionally well. Lyceum’s lead was cut down to 2 points, with the score line reading 63-61, with an over two minutes remaining in the game. However CIS failed to end the game on the momentum created, giving Lyceum a chance to recover, ending the match, 67-62.
