North Western, Central and Southern Provinces resister big wins

Group stage matches of the Prima U15 Provincial Championship got underway last weekend. Here’s a brief look into the matches which took place today.

Southern Province VS Eastern Province

An all-round performance by Sandun Mendis helped Southern Province register a whopping 216 run victory over Eastern Province today at Mattegoda Army grounds. Sandun top scored for the Southerners with 69 runs as they posted a formidable total of 285 for 8 in their lot of 50 overs. Ranindu Rashantha scored 67 and Navod Paranawithana scored 66 runs. In reply Eastern Province could not put up a fight as Sandun Mendis rattled through their batting line up. Sandun ended with figures of 5 for 6.

Central Province VS North Central Province

Another one sided game at Thurstan grounds ended with Central Province registering an easy 134 run victory. Central Province was asked to bat after losing the toss and they managed to post 262 runs in their quota of 50 overs. Lasitha Warellagama top scored with an unbeaten 85 while Dulaj Bandara managed to chip in with a valuable half century. In reply North Central Province was never in the hunt as wickets tumbled at regular intervals. They could only manage to reach 128 runs before being bowled out. Sahan Siriwardane finished with top figures of 4 for 19.

Western Province South-Outer VS Western Province South

This encounter between two Western Province teams ended with Western South-Outer registering a convincing 65 run victory over Western South. Western South won the toss and elected to bowl first. They could not control the run flow as Western South-Outer reached 254 in their 50 overs. Kavindu Umayanga top scored with 54 while Mihiranga Harshan and Dumith Gimhan chipped in with valuable cameos. Western South gave a good fight but due to the fall of wickets, pressure got to them and they collapsed for just 189 in 45.3 overs. Chamod Sandaru played a fighting knock of 59 while Lahiru Madushanka ended with best figures of 3 for 24.

Western Province North-Outer VS Western Province North

Another clash between two Western Province teams took place at Mahara Prison grounds today. Western North reached to a comfortable victory beating Western North-Outer by 5 wickets. Western North-Outer won the toss and elected to bat first. They only managed to post 186 runs before being bowled out inside 46 overs. Avishka Tharidu top scored with 66 runs while the wickets were shared amongst the bowlers. In reply Western North got over the line in 47.3 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Dineth Jayakodi was the highest run scorer for Western North with an unbeaten 56.

Northern Province VS North Western Province 

Gayantha Wickramaarachchi’s heroics with both bat and ball saw North Western reach a convincing 7 wicket victory over Northern Province at St Joseph’s College Grounds, Maradana. Gayantha bagged 5 for 9 which allowed North Western Province to restrict Northerners to just 108 runs. Kavindu Ranasinghe bowled impressively to finish with 4 for 17. In reply, North Western reached the target in just 20.2 overs with 7 wickets in hand. Gayantha chipped in with a quick fire 26 runs in the chase.

Western Province Central VS Uva Province 

Thashika Nirmal’s 6 wicket haul helped Western Province Central to register a 59 run victory against Uva today at Panagoda Army grounds. Westerners posted 256 in their lot of 50 overs. Pawan Rathnayke top scored with 72 runs while Leshan Amarasinghe missed out on a well made half century when he was dismissed for 48 runs. In reply Uva fought hard but the fall of wickets did not help their cause. However Thevin Amarasinghe top scored with an unbeaten 76 but the star of the match was Thashika Nirmal who bagged 6 for 31 runs.
