Harin Cooray leads St. Joseph’s College to Rector’s Trophy

Captain Harin Cooray took a match bag of 11 for 31 as St. Joseph’s College registered an innings and 191-run win over St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna in their U19 Schools Traditional encounter played in Jaffna.

The home team resumed day two on 65 for 6 and was bundled out for just 83 runs as left-arm spinning Cooray took 5 wickets for 13 runs. Cooray had no hesitation to enforce the follow-on as they were leading by more than 300 runs courtesy their mammoth first innings score of 386.

St. Patrick’s College had no answer to the spin barrage of St. Joseph’s as they lasted only 43 overs in their second innings. Cooray returned with figures of 6 for 18 while his left-arm spin twin, Havin Perera collected 2 scalps.

With this win, St. Joseph’s College won the inaugural Rector’s Trophy which was initiated by Rev. Fr. Jero Selvanayagam, Rector of St Patrick’s College and Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel Rector of St Joseph’s College.

St. Joseph’s College coached by Roger Wijesuriya will be brimming with confidence after a winning start to their 2016/17 season and will look to return to Colombo with another championship as they are gearing up for the upcoming Murali Harmony Cup 2016 which starts on 21st September.

Thurstan College vs Dharmapala College

Thurstan College handed the third consecutive defeat to Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya as the Thurstanites registered a comfortable 10-wicket win in their U19 division 1 cricket encounter worked out in Pannipitiya.

The visitors resumed second day’s play on 205 for 2. Prageesha Mendis was the overnight batsman unbeaten on 72; he went onto score 28 runs in the first session to register his maiden century in first XI cricket as Thurstan declared their first innings on 270 for 5.

After being bundled out for 118 in the first innings, Palians fared well in the second innings to score 166 but could not avert a defeat. They were defeated comprehensively by Prince of Wales’ College and S. Thomas’ College in their previous two matches. Sawan Prabash and Thushal Madushanka were chief destroyers taking 3 wickets apiece.

Dharmapala College – 118 all out in 40.3 overs: Mahima Weerakoon 39, Gimhan Perera 25, Nipuna Lakshan 5/33, Thushal Madushanka 2/24.

Ananda College vs Mahinda College

Ananda College had to be satisfied only with first-innings points against Mahinda College, Galle in their under 19 division 1 group B encounter at Army grounds in Panagoda.

At stumps on day one, both teams were on level terms as Ananda College made a reply of 131 for 5 to the similar first innings score of Mahinda College. The home team, Ananda College declared their first innings on 241 for 9, gaining a 110-run lead. Supun Waragoda top scored with an unbeaten 51 while three other batsmen chipped in with 30s.

The Mahindians batted bravely in their second innings as they battled for more than 70 overs to keep the Anandians at bay. K Kevin made an unbeaten, fighting knock of 52 while Sri Lanka U19 cap Sammu Ashan grabbed 4 wickets with his off-spin bowling.
