Prince of Wales and St. Sebastian’s seal semi-final berths

U15 Cricket – Quarter-Final roundup

Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa booked their semi-final spots in the ongoing Singer U-15 Division 1 Cricket Tournament, courtesy of first innings wins over St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and Mahanama College, Colombo respectively. St. Thomas’ College is placed at a strong position at the end of the 1st day of the 3rd Quarter Final against De Mazenod College.

At Stumps on Day 1, Mahanama College were at 65/2 in reply to the Sebastian-ites’ 265 all out. Pawan Senal tried his best to get the first innings lead for his team, but no other batsmen were able to bat around him except for Yasaru Sasadaka as they were bundled out for 208 in 70 overs. Pawan stroked a brilliant knock of 126 and Yasaru contributed with 28 runs. Dunith Wellage did most of the damage with the ball claiming 4 wickets for 60 runs and was well supported by Shanel Fernando who picked up 2 wickets for 31 runs.

The Sebs ensured that they didn’t give the slightest chance for Mahanama to make a comeback into the game by batting out all the remaining overs. At the close of play St. Sebastian’s were at 188/7 in 50 overs as Janushka Perera top scored with 94. Sukitha Prasanna and Shanel Fernando chipped in with 29 and 25 respectively. Savindu Kavinda took 2 for 19 and Chamindu Madusanka bagged 2 wickets for 52 runs. The first innings lead of 57 runs was enough for the Sebs to make their way through to the semi finals.

Earlier, the Sebs went on to post 265 in 72.2 with Nadeera Fernando scoring a classy ton and Shanel Fernando making an impressive 56. Pawan Senal picked up 3 wickets for 52 runs.

Prince of Wales resumed Day 2 at Darley Road needing 30 more runs to gain a first innings lead with 4 wickets in hand. The Josephian bowlers too tried their best to restrict the Cambrians below 151, but at last it was the batting side which had the last laugh as they managed to get a narrow 4 run lead before being bowled out for 155 in 66.3 overs.

The Joes’ intent to go for an outright win was evident as they started to bat aggressively. St. Joseph’s cruised to 166 in 23 overs before declaring with Dineth Jayakody stroking a sublime 73 not out and Lakshan Gamage making a quick 51 not out. Prince of Wales were set a target of 163 with plenty of overs remaining.

The Cambrians didn’t fall for the trap as they started cautiously, trying to negate the possibility of a Josephian win. The run rate slowly improved as the innings progressed, but it was not enough to chase down the target. Lakshan Perera went onto score 71 not out and Dinara Fernando contributed with 37 as Prince of Wales ended up at 151/4 in 47 overs ensuring their spot in the semis.

Early on, St Joseph’s were put to bat first and they could only manage a mediocre 151 in 43.3 overs. Lakshan Gamage top scored with 33 while Neluka Fernando being the chief destroyer with the ball claiming 4 wickets for 37 runs.

The 3rd Quarter Final of the Singer U-15 Cricket tournament was played between S. Thomas’ College, Mt Lavinia and De Mazenod College, Kandana at De Mazenod Grounds. S. Thomas’ College won the toss and elected to field first. De Mazenod went onto post 205 before being bowled out in 59.3 overs. Shenal De Morayaz played a fine knock of 50, Adeepa Nanayakkara chipped in with 39 and Sihina Sithumina remained unbeaten on 43. Delmin Rathnayake was sensational with the ball bagging 4 wickets for 64 runs and was well supported by Dineth Wanniarachchi who claimed 2 for 14.

The Thomians batted sensibly to see through the day without much damage as they ended up at 123/2 in 33 overs. Malithra Wimalasooriya made 42 and Mohomad Ishak remained not out on 46.
