BMS crowned Red Bull Cricket Champions 2016

Business Management School (BMS) met Saegis Campus in the finals of the Red Bull Inter Campus Cricket Tournament for 2016. BMS recorded a comprehensive 6-wicket victory this evening and emerged Champions of the Red Bull Inter Campus Cricket Tournament.

The captain of the Saegis Campus team won the toss and put BMS into field first. Saegis Campus posted a comfortable 163 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their respective 20 overs with the number 10 batsman, Anuk de Alwis top scoring with 33 runs.

Damith Priyadarshana and skipper Shehan Fernando contributed with 26 and 19 runs respectively. Sri Lanka’s 134th Test player and right-arm seamer, Dasun Shanaka topped the bowling charts for BMS getting 4 wickets for 22 runs from his 4 overs.

The target of 164 seemed to be too little for the men in red. Favourites BMS managed to chase down the target quite easily in just 16.4 overs.

The well known Sri Lanka ODI and T20 player Shehan Jayasuriya who has been dominating the tournament in terms of runs delivered yet again, scoring an unbeaten 38-ball 58. The Saegis bowling department did well to try and defend their  innings score but however they were not successful.

Off-spinner, Sangeeth Cooray conceded 34 runs but was rewarded only with 1 wicket as Shanaka slapped through the covers for a boundary to score the winning runs.

BMS maintained their unbeaten record, winning the match by 6 wickets and claimed the Red Bull Inter Campus Tournament trophy from the hands of national player Lahiru Thirimanne and tournament director Mr. Brendon Kuruppu.

The day was also filled with music and dance as spectators were out supporting their respective teams.

Saegis– 163/9 in 20 overs: Anuk de Alwis 33*, Damith Priyadarshan 26, Dasun Shanaka 22/4, Shehan Jayasuriya 23/1.

BMS– 167/4 in 16.4 overs: Shehan Jayasuriya 58*, Janith Vimukthi 29, Sangeeth Cooray 34/1, Ruwinda Shameen 21/1.

It’s also noteworthy that Skipper Niroshan Dickwella and his boys from BMS will play once again, at an International level at the Red Bull International Inter Campus Cricket Tournament due to be held in September, as the winners of each country will face each other to be crowed champions of the world.

The day, thereby brought to an end the Red Bull Inter Campus Cricket Tournament in Sri Lanka. The tournament showcased some good talent from the university and school boys and hosted some record breaking innings by BMS (323) and also the highest victory margin (222) under the prevailing records.
