Dear First Years…

When I received my admission letter from the University of Colombo, I was absolutely delighted. People have a lot of good things to say about this University, but it is only once you get here that you truly realize its value.

I remember my first day at the University, I was excited about starting a new chapter in my life and at the same time I was scared. It worried me that I may not make any friends on my first day and I didn’t know how the seniors would treat us. Three years have gone by (and it went by so fast!) and as I am about to step into my final year at the University, I can assure you that those first few months on campus, however challenging it was, were where some of the best memories were created.

Here at the Colombo Science Faculty there’s more to the degree than the things you learn from books. Each student is given an equal opportunity to discover one’s potential as well as to lead a well-balanced student life.
There’s so much diversity among us as the student population consists of people from different parts of the country, belonging to different faiths. So with time, we learn to respect each other’s individuality and opinions. There are a variety of cultural events hosted by the students such as Avurudhu Uthsawaya, Bodhu Bathi Gee, Vani Vizha and Christmas Carols which promote cultural understanding among the students.

For those of you who like physical activities, there’s a wide range of sports to choose from. You can do as many sports as you like and you can even try something new for the first time. If you’re not too keen on playing a sport, you can get involved with various clubs and societies.

The Students’ Blog hosted by the Media Unit is an excellent platform for budding writers to express their views on various subjects. The Media Unit also welcomes those who are interested in reporting and videography.

There is never a dull day at the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo. It may take a while for you to settle down and to find your niche within the University. I assure you that even with all the challenges that may come your way, the next few years are going to be some of the best years of your life. Embrace the opportunities, get to know the people around you and don’t be afraid to try something new. And most importantly, never hesitate to stand up for yourself.

Here’s wishing you the best of everything as you embrace this new chapter in your lives! We are looking forward to seeing you 🙂
