A road is a waterfall

For nearly one and half years I wrote for the kids' and youth sections of the Nation newspaper , which I enjoyed thoroughly . This article was meant to be published in that section. But couldn't as I moved to Daily News. Scroll down for other articles in this series .

It has been raining nonstop for a couple of days. Very heavily.  When it rains hard all water runs down rapidly. A girl knew it well after having observed the way that rain water flows up from a hilly road. She would love to walk down the roads when it rains butterflies. So that she could chase the water. Through the rock and puddle that is formed usually from rainwater or from irrigation.

It is not only the little girls and boys who would love to walk in the rain. During heavy rains the hilly road surrounding University of Kelaniya that leads to Wewalduwa turns into an abundant flow. All rainwater flows down in great volumes. It looks like a waterfall. The University students would slide down the road along with the water current. They do not mind getting their trousers wet. They are thrilled by the sudden energy that makes them run through water waves. It is as if they are being pushed by a heavy wind to somewhere down the road.

But it is not just about walking down a road during rains. You’ll know more about it  if you concentrate on each step that you keep.

Suppose it’s raining heavily and you are walking down a hilly road. As you walk you would feel like you are been dragged away with the rapids. It is like a waterfall trek. You will have to slow down the journey a bit. You will be putting most of your weight on the heels and keeping them tight to the soil so that you would not get pushed away to the direction that the water wants you to go.According to science this happens because  gravity ends up doing work on you as you move to a lower level and it would try to take you to where it wants to.  It sounds fun to move fast with the water. But it can be dangerous in case you slip and fall.

Unlike a normal day, roads take a different surface on rainy days. It is hard to walk on them when it rains because they are wet and slippery. And they will take a different pattern on rainy days with lots of puddles and stone and rock. That is how it is. Life also takes different patterns on different days. The work we do today can be easier than tomorrow. The day after can be hard. Again easy. Hard again.  Life will drag us to places where we don’t like to go. It will make us do things that we never want to do. We make plans but they will not work always the way we want to. No matter where we would end up. There is always a way to come back to the right track.  All what it takes is the determination and patience. Like putting a lot of force to your legs to make sure that you do not get dragged by the water wave when walking down.
