Waiting for Extraordinary

(Poetry this time. One of those pieces that were cathartic to write more than anything. The structure is well - unstructured, something I find myself leaning towards a lot more as of late when I do write poetry. A phase? Perhaps. On another note - Khaled Hosseini's new book, 'And the Mountains Echoed' is beyond amazing. MUST read)

Waiting for Extraordinary

“I suspect the truth is that we are waiting, all of us, against insurmountable odds, for something extraordinary to happen to us.”
― And the Mountains Echoed (Khaled Hosseini)

I wait – seated, pen and paper in hand.
Sometimes hearing the echo’s of dreams
Alive and forgotten making their sounds
Reminding us all of what has been, what will be
What has come, what is to come.
I breathe in deep and slow when I see it
Coiled like smoke around me
Dancing and twisting just out of reach
I reach out, my fingers stretching and reaching
Almost touching
Almost able to hold
On
Tight.

It refuses to be touched
It must not be touched
Dancing, twirling, twisting away
It must be left to surround you
Like a veil
Through which the world is seen
And you must learn
To breathe it in
Taste it
But like a cigarette
Blow it out again slowly before the poison settles
And learn to see clearly through the haze
And reach out for other fingers
In between the smoke
The cracks
Almost able to touch
Yours
Gently
