මේ අනුව මේ අසිරිමත් ලංකාවේ තමන්ටම ගහගත් මාධ්‍ය ගොඩට සියත ද එක්වෙයි.

මේ සම්බන්ධයෙන් වගකිව යුතු අය සොයා ගස් බැදීමට කැළණිය පැත්තෙන් විශේෂ කණ්ඩායමක් මේ වනවිටත් යොදවා ඇති අතර මාධ්‍යකරුවන් තවමත් ස්වයං විනයක් පවත්වා ගැනීමට අපොහොසත් වී ඇති බව මේ අනුව පෙනී යන්නේ යයි පොලිස් ප්‍රකාශකයෙක් තිරයෙන් පිටුපසට වී සිය හෙලුව වහගනිමින් ප්‍රකාශ කරනු දැක ගන්නට ලැබිණ.

එහෙම මාධ්‍යවලට වෙන කවුරුන් හෝ ඉදිරිපත් වී විනයක් ඇති කළ යුතු බවට ඇත්තට ම වාදයක් නැත. සැබෑ චණ්ඩි ඉන්නේ එහෙම වැඩවලට පාවිච්චියට ගන්නටය. පොලීසිය හා ආරක්ෂක අංශ ඉන්නේ ඒ වෙලාවට කැමැත්තක් කරගන්නට ඉඩ දී හෙමින් මාරුවී යන්නට ය.

ආණ්ඩුවට කහින දේශප්‍රේමීන්ගේ මුඛ පුට්ටුවී ඇති නිසා සියත පමණක් සද්දෙ දාන්න කල්පනා කරන එක තේරුමක් නැතැයි ජාතික මාධ්‍ය සංසදය විශේෂ ප්‍රකාශයක් කරමින් මේ අතර කියා සිටී.

මේ සිද්ධිය නිසා බෑන් කී මූන් පමණක් නොව ජීඇස්පී දෙන්න බැහැයි කියූ සුද්දන්ද හෝදටෝම බිය වී ඇතැයි වාර්ථාවෙන අතර මේ අනුව ඉදිරි දිනකදී මදියි නොකියන්න ජී ඇස් පී යක් ලැබෙන්නට ද ඉඩ තිබේ.

Why the Maligawa Road Should Not Be Reopened

The current proposal to reopen the road stretch adjacent to the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy is being met with a show of approval as well as opposition, though on the whole the response on the part of the local Buddhist laity as well as the clergy has been rather lukewarm either way for some inexplicable reason (may be a case of the silence of the silent majority!). In any case, it appears that a final decision is yet to be taken in this regard. The delay affords the authorities an opportunity to reconsider the wisdom of restoring an anomaly on the sacred Maligawa premises that should have been permanently removed long ago.
Surprisingly, however, the Malwatte Prelate has no objection to the reopening, while the Central Province Governor is opposed to the move as reported in The Island newspaper on July 6 and 8 respectively. We hope that the wiser counsel of the Governor will prevail.
In the opinion of many people, an alternative route to and from downtown Kandy (i.e. an alternative to the one now traversing the Maligawa compound as it were) can be provided at little cost to the country by constructing a bridge across the Kandy lake at its narrowest point. An argument against such a project is that it will spoil the beauty of the place, but this can be easily countered by saying that a highway that is too close to the stately Maligawa edifice more seriously detracts from its beauty and majesty; besides, there is nothing to prevent the bridge from being designed appropriately incorporating compatible Kandyan architectural features that will enhance the beauty of the whole landscape.
A bridge across the lake is not a new idea. More than ten years ago, appalled by the thoroughly polluted state of the Kandy lake, I wrote an article entitled “The Kandy Lake and Its Future” to The Island. It was published on Friday 26th November 1999. The article included the following paragraph:

To reduce air pollution through motor traffic a bridge may be constructed across the Lake in an aesthetically pleasing manner where it is narrowest. (Such a bridge will not only lessen problems of pollution, it will also benefit all those who travel this way and the state by reducing fuel cost and vehicular wear and tear.) The motor-boat service now being operated on the Lake should be replaced with a non-fuel-consuming device such as a canoe, because the area that the Lake covers is quite small and even a small motor-boat can cause a relatively significant amount of pollution. Wooden boats will have the additional advantage of providing employment to a number of people and of adding some rural charm to the boat-riding experience that tourists, both local and foreign, love so much.

The idea about a bridge over the Kandy lake was something that had been already mooted at that time as I remember, though there was no sign of its being practically pursued. However, about six months later, The Island (Tuesday 13th June 2000) carried a news item to the effect that the then Ministry of Transport and Highways was considering a proposal to construct a bridge across the lake. The proposal was never implemented. (No reference is ever made, as far as I know, to the environmental pollution caused by the motor-boat service in the lake. This is perhaps because many people would think that the pollution caused by the boat is nothing compared to that caused by motor-car exhaust fumes around the lake.)

There is no question about the necessity of solving Kandy’s traffic congestion and air pollution problems. But the reopening of the Maligawa road will not significantly ease the situation caused by these problems. Even if it does (unlikely though that is), the reopening should not be allowed. Instead alternative ways of eliminating those hazards must be found. The stretch of road skirting the Maligawa too close to it must be permanently closed. This should have been done long before the terrorist attack on the Maligawa on January 25, 1998 which led to its closure by the authorities.

The preservation and protection of the Dalada Maligawa is a national obligation of the highest priority because of its unparalleled importance for us, which is twofold. First, it is the most venerated Buddhist shrine for the Buddhists within the country and for those in the wider world outside. Second, the Tooth Relic’s special connection with the temporal overlordship of the island, and the importance of the city of Kandy as the last royal capital invest the place with great historical significance for the nation; the general Kandy area which sits astride the focal point (at Katugastota) from where radiate the three ancient divisions of the state of Sri Lanka known as the ‘thrisinhalay’ (Ruhunu, Maya, and Pihiti) is sanctified by the blood of our patriotic forefathers who heroically fought against rapacious foreign intruders for safeguarding the independence of our beloved motherland.

A digression into history is necessary for me to make these points clear. Those timeservers who act as if they are ignorant of this must be reminded of what any ordinary Sri Lankan with some education knows about the Dalada Maligawa and Kandy the last capital of the kingdom of Sinhalay where it stands.

A Kalinga princess by the name of Hemamali travelled to Sri Lanka with her husband Prince Dantha disguised as ascetics about the year 310 BCE. She brought the Tooth Relic concealed in her hair. King Kirti Sri Meghavarna (301-328 CE) who was the ruler of Lanka at that time received them with great honour, and conducted them to Anuradhapura, the royal capital. He housed the relic within the precincts of the royal palace, and ordered an annual perahera to be held in its honour. Over the centuries it became a well established tradition to enshrine the Tooth Relic within the royal palace premises, and to hold an annual Dalada perahera. By the 12th century, a convention had developed whereby the custodianship of the Tooth Relic was accepted as conferring on the person the sovereignty over Sri Lanka. For this reason the protection of the Tooth Relic was of great religious and secular concern for the Sinhalese kings.

With the shifting of the capital city from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa, Vijayabahu I (1056-1111) built a Dalada Maligawa immediately to the north of the royal palace. Later, Parakramabahu I (1156-1183) and Nissanka Malla (1187-1196) also made imposing Maligawas to house the Tooth Relic. For the Sinhalese the link between the possession of the Tooth Relic and sovereignty over the island became indissoluble. Whenever the security situation deteriorated, the royal capital was shifted from one city to another: from Polonnaruwa to Dambadeniya under Vijayabahu III (1232-1236) who had saved the country from twenty-one years of cruel tyranny under the wicked invader Magha of Kalinga; again the capital was changed from Dambadeniya to Yapahuwa to Kurunegala, to Kotte, and finally to Kandy. The Tooth Relic was hidden in various locations, the Buddhist monks playing a major role in its protection. The connection between the custodianship of the Tooth Relic and royal power over the island was even internationally known, which attracted the hostile attention of certain foreign soldiers of fortune. Chandrabhanu was one of these. He made two unsuccessful attempts to seize the Relic and ascend the throne. He landed at Mahatittha with his Javaka army on his second attempt during the reign of King Vijayabahu IV (1271-1273). To the king he “sent forth messengers with the message: I shall take Tisihala; I shall not leave it to thee. Yield up to me therefore together with the Tooth Relic of the Sage, the Bowl Relic and the royal dominion. If thou wilt not, then fight.” Vijayabahu accepted the challenge, defeated the invader, and “united Lanka under the umbrella of his dominion” (Culavamsa , Part II, Geiger translation. Asian Educational Services, New Delhi and Chennai. 2003, p.187-88.) “Tisihala” refers, as Geiger explains on p.139, to the threefold division of the island into Patittharattha, Mayarattha, and Rohana, which correspond respectively to modern Pihitirata, Mayarata, and Ruhuna.

When Kotte was captured by the Portuguese, the monks fled the city surreptitiously carrying the Sacred Relic with them. They hid it in a safe place until it was again housed in the two-storeyed Dalada Maligawa built in Kandy by King Wimaladharmasuriya I (1592-1604) who ascended the throne there. (The present Dalada Maligawa is the same one built by King Wimaladharmasuriya, but it has undergone a number of periodic renovations since its inception.) The Kandyan Kingdom under Wimaladharmasuriya’s successors, for half of the nearly 450 years of predatory European aggression in various forms against our motherland between 1505 and 1948, had to bear the brunt of the relentless onslaughts of three European powers.

Writing about Vijayabahu III (mentioned above), who as a young warrior collected an army of combatants from the mountainous areas and attacked Magha to put an end to his depredations, the great D.C.Vijayawardane in his “The Revolt in the Temple” (1953) composed to “commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism, of civilization in Lanka, and of the Sinhalese nation…” praises the ‘mountaineers’ (as he calls them) as “always the last to be subdued and the first to revolt”.

The great rebellion of 1818 led by Keppetipola the Maha Dissawe of Uva , a heroic reaction to British perfidy, provides a piece of evidence for Vijayawardane’s assertion. In this connection, a reference to Professor Tennekoon Vimalananda’s “The Great Rebellion of 1818” (1970) is appropriate. Professor Vimalananda’s work of scholarship mainly draws on the 10,000 page report of the Select Committee of the British Parliament on Ceylon presided over by Mr Hume, which sat at Westminster from 1849-1850 to inquire into the grievances of people and the maladministration of the officials of the British Government in Ceylon. (The report contains records of official correspondence between Governor Robert Brownrigg and the Secretary of State, records of statements by British and native functionaries, etc who directly participated in the events connected with the rebellion, and numerous other records of evidence). The authoritative findings of the select committee categorically denounces the Governor’s deliberate attempt to evade commitments made under the Kandyan Convention. Professor Vimalananda gives an authentic account of the “heroic bravery and courage displayed by the Kandyan Peasantry against the might of the British Empire in a war in which the Sinhalese nearly inflicted defeat upon the invaders” which made the British Governor General Robert Brownrigg communicate his anxiety to the Home Government about the (British) Indian Government’s delay in sending British troops from India to Ceylon to deal with the situation.

The ferocity of the suppression of the uprising can be gauged from the following passage from M.A. Durand Appuhamy’s THE REBELS OUTLAWS AND ENEMIES TO THE BRITISH (M.D. Gunasena & Co. Ltd, 1990.):

The colour sergeant Calladine wrote in his diary, “at this time there was seldom a day passed but we had parties out scouring the country for a distance round, burning all they came across and shooting those they could not take prisoners”. He waxed lyrical in praise of the atrocities committed by him and his fellow British officers:

“But British courage still prevailing
Soon we made our foes to fly,
And their villages assailing,
Caused some hundreds for to die.
See their villages a-burning,
And their temples soon laid low.
This the wretches get for joining
With the jungle rebel foe.”

During the 1818 Kandyan rebellion Keppetipola temporarily secured the possession of the Dalada by having a monk remove it secretly from the Maligawa as mentioned in the above source; the rebel leader used the Relic to rally the peasants around him in support of his cause. But the leaders and their followers gave up the struggle when the Tooth Relic fell into the hands of the British because they thought that with the Relic in their possession the British were now the legitimate rulers of the country. That was the power the Tooth Relic had upon our people.

Thus, the Dalada Maligawa is a sacred living monument to that august history; it stands on ground hallowed by the blood of our patriotic forefathers who breathed their last defending the proud independence of our land; it enshrines the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha the Enlightened One who taught his followers to extend loving kindness to every being irrespective of their colour, size, beliefs, qualities, age, importance, or whatever other attribute one could think of.

The rapacious Europeans did their damnedest to obliterate our Buddhist heritage. The Portuguese burnt down the historic Kelaniya Temple built, as the Sinhalese Buddhists have always believed, on a spot sanctified by the touch of the Buddha’s feet. The alien occupiers hemmed in the Dalada Maligawa with non-Buddhist structures to eclipse its majesty, and to reduce it into insignificance with a view to weakening the religious hold it had on our people. A statue erected in colonial times in memory of a British governor which had no religious significance was removed after Sri Lanka became a republic.

The Sri Dalada Maligawa is the holiest Buddhist shrine in the country and in the whole world. It enshrines the Tooth Relic of the Buddha which is venerated as if it were the living Buddha. For most of the period of its existence in Sri Lanka the Relic has been accorded the highest honour as a palladium, the possession of which was held to legitimize a ruler’s royal authority. A busy road in close proximity to it is not proper. That is why I believe that the Maligawa road should not be reopened, but that an appropriate alternative solution to the traffic and pollution problem must be found.

(Before mailing this write-up to the editor, I went and looked at the part of the Dalada Vidiya that still remains blockaded. I was encouraged by what I saw: the portion of the road parallel to the esplanade opposite the Maligawa was being paved with cement blocks, which I read as a sign that this road will not be reopened after all.)

Magha and his friends used to work for social well being and, as a result of that he was born as “Shakraya” (a superior God who can feel the distresses of the worldly beings) , in the heaven.

ගොවි රජවරුන්ගේ අද දවස............?

යාපහුව අපේ මානව ශිෂ්ඨාචාරයේ තවත් එක් සංධිස්ථානයකි. එමෙන්ම 13 වැනි සියවසේ දශකයක් පමණ කෙටි කාල සීමාවක් සදහා දිව‍යිනේ අගනගරය බවටද පත්ව තිබු පැරණි නගරයකි. පොලොන්නරුව රාජධානියෙන් පසුව නිරන්තරයෙන් ඇතිවුන විවිද සතුරු ආක්‍රමණ හමුවේ වැදගත් ආරක්ෂක ස්ථානයක් ලෙස මෙය භාවිතා කර තිබෙන බව සාක්ෂි හමුවී ඇත.

කුරුණෑගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ මහව ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කොට්ඨාශ‍යට අයත්ව යාපහුව පිහි‍ටා තිබේ. ප්‍රාග් ‍ෛඑතිහාසික අවධියේ පටන් පූර්ණ ජනාවාසයක් බවට යාපහුව හා අවට ප්‍රදේශ පත්ව තිබේ. අතීතයේ පටන් කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය ප්‍රදේශය තුල දැකගත හැකි විය. වී ගොවිතැන, හේන් ගොවිතැන සහ කිරි හරක් පාලනය මේ අනුව සිදුවිය. එකල රට පාලනය කල ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ රජවරුන්ගේ අගනගරය බවට පත්ව තිබු මෙය ගොවි රජවරුන්ගේත් අග නගරයක් බවටද පත්විය.

අතීතයේ පටන් වී ගොවිතැන බහුල වශයෙන් මහව ප්‍රදේශය තුල සිදුකෙරේ. වර්තමානයේ කටුක භුමියක දුෂ්කර ක්‍රියාවක් මැද යල මහ කන්න වග‍ා කිරීමට ගොවියන් යොමුවී සිටිති. එයිනුත් වැඩි වශයෙන් වගා කටයුතු කරනු ලබන්නේ මාස් කන්නයේ පමණි.

" වැව් වතුරෙන් තමයි අපි වැඩකරන්නේ. ලැබෙන වී අස්වැන්නෙන් තමයි අපි ජීවත්වෙන්නේ. ඒත් ඉතින් දැන් තියෙන ප්‍රශ්නත් එක්ක ඉදිරියෙදි වගා කරන්න නෙවෙයි ජීවත් වෙන්නවත් පුළුවන් වෙයිද කියලා හිතන්න බෑ." මහව ප්‍රාදේශිය ලේකම් කොට්ඨාශයට අයත් කොහොඹකඩවල පදිංචි ඉමිආමි මුදියන්සේලාගේ දයාරත්න එසේ පැවසුවේ යාපහුවේ ගොවි රජවරුන්ගේ අනාගතය එතරම් සුභදායක නොවන බව පැවසීමට ඉගියක් ලබාදීමට මෙනි.

" අපිට තියෙන ලොකුම ගැටළුව තියෙන්නේ වල් අලින් ගෙන්. රෑට ඇවිත් හැමදේම විනාශ කරල යනවා. ඉස්සර ති‍බුනේ නෑ මේ කර‍දරේ දැන් වසර 10ක විතර කාලය ඉදල තමයි මේ ගැටළුව තියෙන්නේ. බව බෝගයක් හදා ගන්න බෑ. අස්වැන්න ටික ගෙදර තියාගන්න බෑ. දැන් අප‍ිට වෙලා තියෙන්නේ දවල් දවසේ වගාකටයුතුවල නිරත වෙලා රෑට පැල් රකින්න." දයාරත්න වැඩිදුරටත් එසේ පැවසුවේ වල් අලින්ගෙන් සිදුව තිබෙන කරදරකාරී බව පැවසීමටය.

වල් අලින්ගෙන සිදුවන හානි මගහැරවීම සදහා අලින් පන්නා දැමීම කල යුතුය. ඒ සදහා වනජීවී කාර්යාලයෙන් අදාල වෙඩි කරල් ලබාගැනීමට මේ ගොවියන්ට සිදුවෙයි. " අලින්ගෙන් තියෙන කරදර ගැන වනජීවී එකට කිව්වම ඒ අය කියන්නේ අපට එන්න වාහන නෑ කියලා. ඊට‍ පස්සෙ ඉතින් අපි ගල්ගමුවට යන්න ඕන වෙඩි කරල් අරන් එන්න. එතනට යන්නත් යන වාහනේට රුපියල් 1000ක විතර තෙල් පිච්චෙනවා. ඒ ගියාමත් දෙන්නේ වෙඩි කරල් තුනක් නැත්නම් හතරක් විතරයි. සමහර දවස් වලට එක රෑට මේ හතරම ගහන්න වෙනවා. ඊට පස්සෙ ඉතින් අපි ආපහු දවසේ ආයිමත් යන්න ඕන වෙඩි කරල් අරන් එන්න." කොහොඹකඩවල පදිංචි වයස අවුරුදු 32 වයස ඉමිආමි මුදියන්සේලාගේ තිලකරත්න පවසයි. "දැනට අලි ප්‍රශ්නෙ නිසා මනුස්සයෝ හයදෙනෙක් මැරිල තියෙනවා. ටිවි එකේ රේඩියෝ එකේන් කියනවා මේවට වන්දි දෙනවා කියලා. ඒත් තවම ඒ කිසිවක් නෑ. මේ ගැන දිසාපතිතුමාට කිව්වට වැඩක් නෑ. වනජීවී එකට කිව්වට වැඩක් නෑ. මේ හරියේ ඉන්නේ ගොවිතැන් බතක් කරගෙන ජීවත්වෙන දුගී දුප්පත් ජනතාව. මෙහෙම දේවල් වෙනකොට මේ අයට වගාකර ගන්න බැරිව යනවා. මේ වෙනකොට සිදුවෙලා තියෙන පාඩුව පියවගන්න බැරිව සමහර ගොවියන් මැසි තෙල් බීල මැරිලා තියෙනවා. මේව ගැන හොයන්න කවුරුවත් එන්නෑ." කොහොඹකඩවල ගොවි සංවිධානයේ සභාපති ඉමිආමි මුදියන්සේලාගේ රංබණ්ඩා පවසයි. වසය අවුරුදු දහඅටේදී ගොවිතැනට යොමුවුන රංබණ්ඩාගේ වයස දැනට අවුරුදු 63කි. වසර ගණනාවක් ගොවිතැන පිළිබද අත්දැකීම් ඇති රංබණ්ඩා වැඩිදුරටත් පවසනු ලබන්නේ කිසිදු දිනක ගොවිතැනෙන් සෑහීමට පත්වීමට නොහැකිවූ බවයි. " කොහොඹකඩවල මහ වැව පිරුනොත් විතරයි වගාකරන්න පුළුවන්. මාස් කන්නෙ විතරයි මෙහේ වගාකරන්නේ. ඒ වග‍ාකරන්නෙත් මාසතුනේ වී. ඒ මාස තුනවත් හරියට වගාකරන් බෑ. අපි කොච්චර කිව්වත් රජයෙන් අහන්නෑ. එලි වැටෙනකන් පැල්වල ඉන්නේ. පැල්වලවත් හරියට ඉන්න බෑ ගෙදර කොයිවෙලාවෙ කඩයිද කියල කියන්න බෑ. ලක්ෂ කෝටිගණන් වියදම් කරල පෝසටර් ගහල නිකරුනේ රැස්වීම් කරන්න පුළුවන්. නමුත් මේ යාපහුව ආසනේ ගොවියන් මුහුණ දෙන වල් අලි ගැටළුවට සතපහක් දෙන්නෑ. අපි මිනී පෙට්ටි අරගෙන ගිහින් පාරවල් ගානේ පිකටින් කලේ. එතකොට කියන්නේ ලබන මාසේ දෙන්නම් විසදුමක්. නැත්නම් ඊළග මාසේ දෙන්නම් කියලා. දෙනවයි කියල කිව්වට තාමත් නෑ."

යාපහුව ආසනයේ කාන්තා පිරිමි හැම කෙනෙක්ම වගාකටයුතු වල නිරතවී සිටිති. කාන්තාවන්ද පුරුෂයන් මෙන් එක සමානව ව‍ැඩකලද ලැබෙන වැටුප ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවන බව පෙන්වා දෙයි." අපි බෙ‍ාහෝම දුෂ්කරව තමයි මේ කටයුතු නියැලිලා ඉන්නේ. අ‍පේ ඉඩම් වගාකර ගන්න බැරිවුනොත් ඊට පස්සේ මාස කිහිපයක් ජීවත්වෙන්න බැරිව යනවා. ඒක නිසා අපි වෙනත් කුඹුරුවල කුලී වැඩට යනවා. එහෙම ගිහිල්ලත් පිරිමියෙක් හා සමානවම වැඩකරනවා. ඒත් අපිට ලැබෙන්නෙ අඩු වැටුපක්. පිරිමිකෙනෙක්ට රුපියල් 700ක් ලැබෙනවා. අපිට ගෙවන්නේ රුපියල් 400ක් හරි 450ක් පමණයි. ඒක ගන්නෙත් බොහොම අමාරුවෙන්." අතපත්තු හේරත් මුදියන්සේලාගේ සුමනාවතී පැවසුවාය. " අපේ දරුවො ඉගෙන ගන්නෙත් බොහොම අමාරුවෙන්. පාසලට යන්නත් කිළෝමීටර් 4ක් විතර යන්න ඹ්න." සුමනාවතී තම ගොවි දරුවන්ගේ අධ්‍යාපන කටයුතු ගැනත් පැවසුවාය.

" අපිට මාර්ග දුෂ්කරතා තියෙන නිසා ලැබෙන අස්වැන්න ‍අළෙවිකරගන්න ගෙනියන්න අපහසුයි. මෙතන ඉදල මහවටත් තියෙනවා කිළෝමීටර් 12ක් 13ක් විතර. බස්එකක් ගමට එනවා ඒ එන්නෙත් උදේටයි හවසටයි විතරයි. විවිද දුෂ්කරතා මැද්දේ වගාකටයුතු සිදුකලද ලැබෙන අස්වැන්නට නියම මිළක් නොලැබෙන බව ‍කොහොඹකඩවල ගමේ ගොවියන් පෙන්වාදෙති. " අපි බොහෝම අමාරුවෙන් තමයි වගාකරන්නෙ. ඒ වගාකරලත් ලැබෙන අස්වැන්න විකුණගන්න තවත් දුෂ්කර ක්‍රියාවක් කරන්න ඕන. මේහේ ඉදල රජයේ මිළදී ගන්න තැනකට හරි පෞද්ගලික අංශයේ මිළදි ගන්න තැනකටහරි ගෙනියන්න ඕන. ඒ ගෙනිච්චත් අඩු මුදලකට තමයි විකුණ ගන්න පුළුවන් වෙන්නේ. සමහර කන්න වලදි හොද මිළකට විකුණ ගන්නත් පුළුවන්. දැන් මේ වෙනකොට අස්වැන්න කපන කාලේ. ඉස්සරහට අස්වැන්න විකුණන එක කෙ‍ාහොම වෙයිද කියල කියන්න බැහැ." ඉමිආමි මුදියන්සේලාගේ රංජිත් යසරත්න පැවසීය.

දුෂ්කරතා රැසක් මැද යාපහුවේ ගොවි රජවරුන් රටට බත සැපයීමට වෙහෙස මහන්සිවෙති. මේ දක්වා තමන්ගේ ගැටළුවලට නිසි අවධානයක් නොවීම පිළිබදව මේ ගොවියන් තුල පවතින්නේ කනස්සල්ලකි. කෙසේ වුවද ලංකාවේ සිව්වැනි රාජධානිය බවට පත්වු යාපහුව රාජධානියේ ගොවීන් මුහුණ දෙන ගැටළු පිළිබද සොයා බැලීම ඔවුන්ට කරනු ලබන විශාල සේවයකි. ඒ කෙසේ වෙතත් යාපහුව පර්වතය මෙන් නොසැලී දුක් කම්කටොළු මැද දහඩිය මහන්සියෙන් රටට බත සපයන යාපහුවේ ගොවි රජවරුන් අපේ ‍රටට මහගු සම්පතක් වගේම මහත්වූ අභිමානයකි. ගෞරවයකි.

Last night after work, I finally managed to have that margarita that I had been craving for, for a really long time...

Went to Cheers with a colleague and after 3 drinks, we started bonding and it felt really good!

We had good conversations, some eye candy and sharing of past incidents with eachother.

I had a good time and got to know a colleague even more. She really surprised me with her life story.

But, it was good.... really good..

සුබ සහ යස කතාන්දරයේ හැටියට දොරටුපාලයාට රජ වෙන්නට අවස්ථාවක් හිමි විය. එය ඓතිහාසිකව පැවරුණ නමුත් සුබ කුමාරයා තුන් හිතකින්වත් අපේක්ෂා නොකළ සිද්ධියකි. සුබ හා යස පෙනුමෙන් එක සමාන හෙයින් රජතුමා තමන් හමුවේ බලූගැතියන් වෙන ඇමතිවරු හා පරිවාර සේනාව රගනා රුගුම් සියැසින් අලූත් කෝණයකින් දකින්නට ලොබ බැන්දේය. දෙතුන් වතාවක් එසේ කරන්නට බොහොම කැමැත්තෙන් දොරටුපාලයා එකග කර ගත් නමුත් තීරණාත්මක අවස්ථාවේ දී දොරටුපාලයා සුබ රාජ නමින් රජ විය. එසේ වූයේ දොරටුව ලග හිදගෙන රජුගේ කිර් රයාදාමයන්ට හිනා වූ දොරටුපාල රගපෑමට කැමැත්තෙන් සිටි හැබෑ රජ්ජුරුවන්ගේ හිස ගසා දැමීමෙන් අනතුරුවය.

ඉතිහාසයේ අවස්ථා යළි මැවෙන නමුත් එහි නියම මොහොත අනුව තීන්දු ගන්නේ නැති බවක් පෙනෙන්නේ නම් රටට අලූත් ජවයක් පරන් බෝධයක් අපේක්ෂා කළ නොහැකිය.

අභ්ය‍න්තර කැරැල්ලකින් අනතුරුව පක්ෂ නායකත්වය භාරගන්නා ලෙස පොළඹවන ලද එක් අවස්ථාවක නායකත්වයට එරෙහිව යාමේ පාපයක් බව පරද එකාශ විය. ලෙන්ගතු අණ පිළිපදින්නා මිස මෙහෙයවන්නා වීම තමන් සතු බලවේගය බව නොවන පක්ෂයේ සියල්ලෝම පිළිගෙන සිටියහ. අවසානයේ දී කැරළිකරුවන්ට නායකයෙකු සොයාගත නොහැකිවීමෙන් කැරැල්ල දියවී ගියේය.

පරාජයවන හැම අවස්ථාවකම නායකත්වයට එරෙහිව අභියෝග මතුවන නමුත් ඒ සියල්ල වෙනුවෙන් සෘජුව පෙනී සිටින්නෙක් නැත. නායකයා පන්නා දැමිය යුතු බවට ඝෝෂා කරන කිසිවෙකු මීළග නායකයා කවුදැයි කියන්නේ නැත. ඒ තනතුරට තමන් සුදුසු බව එක හිතින් තම තමන් ම හිතනනමුත් එකතු වී පුද්ගලයෙකු නම් නොකරන්නේ මන්ද?

එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ ඉතිහාසයේ පළමු වතාවට වැඩ බලන නායකයෙකු පත්කර විදේශ ගත වන්නට පක්ෂයේ නායකයා තීන්දු කළා පමණක් නොව එය පරා ගතයෝගිකව සිදුකර මාධ්යක මගින් ද අනාවරණය කළේයග එහි හැබෑ අර්ථය කුමක්ද? එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයේ දොරටු පාලයන් මෙන්ම සටනට පිවිසි විට අඩු තරමින් කඩුව වෙනුවට කඩු කොපුව දෙන්නටවත් සමතෙක් නැති බවය.

සාතිශය සංවේගය එය නොවේ. මේ සියලූ වේදනා සංසිද්ධීන් දරාගත නොහැකි ජන කොටසක් ද ලංකාවේ සිටින බව ඔප්පු වීමය. එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂ මූලස්ථානය ඉදිරිපිටට පැමිණ සිය දිවි නසා ගෙන එක්ව ජයගනිල්ලායැයි අභියෝග කරන්නට රියන්සි අල්ගම මහතා ඉක්මන්විය.

දේශපාලකයන් වනාහි හොරුන්ල වංචාකාරයන් අල්ලස් හා පගා ගන්නා වැදගම්මකට නැති පිරිසක් හා සමාජයේ කිසිම බුහුමනකට ලක්විය යුතු නැති පිරිසක් බව අර්ථ දැක්වෙන යුගයක ඒ දේශපාලනඥයන් වෙනුවෙන් හා ඒ දේශපාලන කරයක මය වෙනුවෙන් ජීවිතය පුදන්නට ලාංකිකයෙකු ඉදිරිපත්වීම මෙරට ඉතිහාසයේ දැවැන්ත අවස්ථාවක් නොවේද?

පක්ෂයේ බේද ගැන කළකිරී එහි සමගිය පතා රියැන්සි අල්ගම මහතා පක්ෂ මූලස්ථානය වූ සිරිකොත අසල දී සිය සිරුරට ගිනි තබා ගෙන මිය ගොස් ඇතැයි පුවත්පත්වල පළවී තිබුනි.

රට ජාත්‍යන්තර කුමන්ත්‍රණ ගණනාවකට මුහුණ දී ඉන්නා වෙලාවක ඒවාට විරුද්ධව ගිනි තියාගන්නේ නැතිව කෙහෙම්මල් පක්ෂයක් වෙනුවෙන් රියැන්සි ගිනි තබා ගත්තේ ඇයි දැයි දේශප්‍රේමීහු ප්‍රශ්න කරති. ඇත්තටම අපේ ප්‍රශ්නයත් ඒක ය.

තුන්මුල්ලේ තිබී මාධ්‍ය විසින් අපට පෙන්වා සිටි ප්‍රෙටල් බෝතලය හා ගිනි පෙට්ටිය දුටු අපගේ ඇග සීතලව ගියේ කවුරුන්හෝ එතැනදී ගිනි තබා ගනිතැයි සිතා ය. අඩුවශයෙන් බෑන් කි මූන්ට විරුද්ධව නැතත් මරණයේ අභියස සිටි තම නායකයා වෙනුවෙන් ඇඩු ගෑණියෙක්වත් ඒ වැඩය කරාවිදැයි යන සැකයක් අපට තිබුනේ ය.

එහෙත් ආරංචියේ හැටියට නම් ‍එහෙම කෙනෙක් දේශප්‍රේමින්ට හොයා ගන්නට බැරි වී ඇත්තේ ය. එහෙම වෙලාවක එක්සත් ජාතික පක්ෂයේ මේ සොයා ගැනීම දේශප්‍රේමීන්ගේ ඇහේ කටු ඇනීමක් වී තිබේ.

ඇත්තටම රට වෙනුවෙන් මැරී ඉතිරිව සිටින පවුලටවත් වාසියක් අරන් දෙන්නට තිබූ අවස්ථාවක් අල්ගම විසින් අහිමිකර ගෙන තිබේ. අල්ගමට ගිනි තියාගන්නට තිබුනේ බෑන් කී මූන්ට විරුද්ධව තුන්මුල්ලේ ය. එහෙම වුනානම් ජාතික ශෝක දිනයක්වත් ප්‍රකාශ වෙන්නට ඉඩ තිබිණි.

සමහර විට ඩොලර් ගොඩක් මේ සදහා එන්ජීඕ එකකින්වත් ලැබුනා දැයි කියන්නට දන්නේ නැත (ආණ්ඩුවට මෙන් නොව යූඇන්පියට සාමාන්‍යයෙන් කඹුරන්නේ එහෙම මිනිසුන් ය). ඒ බව විපරම් කිරීමට රහස් පොලීසියේ විශේෂ කණ්ඩායමක් යොදන ලෙස අපි අප‍ගේ ආණ්ඩුවෙන් ඉතා ඕනෑකමින් ඉල්ලා සිටිමු.

එක්තරා විස්ස විජ්ජාලයක, විද්‍යා නොවන පීඨයක අංශ ප්‍රධානී මහැදුරා සහ තවත් කථිකාචාර්ය වරයෙක් සම්මන්ත්‍රනයකට සහභාගී වීමට ලන්ඩන් බලා පිටත් වූහ. මහ ඇදුරා සම්පූර්න බටහිර ඇඳුමින් සැරසී එද්දී සගයා සැරසී ආවේ ජාතික ඇඳුමිනි. ශ්‍රි ලන්කන් ගුවන් සේවයට අයත් ගුවන් යානයේ එක ලඟ අසුන් දෙකක හරිබරි ගැසී හිඳගත් මේ දෙදෙනාටම විදේශ ගමන් මැජික් නොවන නිසා අතරින් පතර වචනයකින් දෙකකින් දොඩමලු වෙමින් ගුවන් යානය ගුවන් ගත වනතෙක් සැහැල්ලුවෙන් ගත කලහ. ගුවන් යානය ගුවනට නැගී සුලු වෙලාවකින් සුරූපී ශ්‍රී ලංකන් ගුවන් සේවිකාවක් ට්‍රොලියක් සමඟ මේ දෙදෙනා වෙත පැමිනියාය.

Restaurants in Negombo Sri Lanka – Rodeo – Oasis – Phoenix – Bijou Swiss – Villa Araliya Vegetarian

Negombo, 1.5 hours from Colombo, is a small tourist town / fishing village with a walkable strip of restaurants on Poruthota Rd (formerly Lewis Place) and hotels around it. Because it's so compact, you can go from kadala karaththe to restaurant to pub and stagger back to your room at the end of the night.

Even better, there are a wide variety of restaurants, all of which are quite good and reasonably priced. As a result, even when we went for a holiday weekend at Villa Araliya, all we did was eat. Negombo has all these activities like Dutch Canal rides - with kasippu on the way - and Muthurajawela swamp visits but we never cared: we just hung out and hoovered various kinds of food. These were some of our favorites:

Oasis Beach Hotel and Restaurant

It doesn't look promising but we had a - pretty good - pizza here.

Rodeo Bar and Restaurant

Rodeo has a really good burger and a very wide menu. Two menus in fact: one is Italian and the other is a mish mosh / hodge podge of western and eastern cuisine. And liquor. And a giant cow skull.

Phoenix Ice Restaurant

Right next to the turn off to Villa Araliya on Lewis Pl / Porutota Rd, but a little bit away from the main set of restaurants, this is a nice little place with a wide menu and live music on the weekends. Owned by a Brit / Sri Lankan couple, it is nicely decorated and lit in a subdued style. The food is low priced but a bit hit and miss: I'd say they'd've done better with a smaller menu and more focus on each item.

Bijou Swiss

For some reason, Sri Lankans love German food. This is Swiss but honestly the only difference between that and German is the level of boiled-ness. If you like schnitzel, pork knuckles and various forms of cabbage - boiled, pickled, etc - this is your place in Negombo.

Villa Araliya (Vegetarian)

It has an excellent restaurant with a beautiful view of the pool and an entirely vegetarian / Italian menu. The pizza margherita - which they delivered to our room - was excellent: definitely one the best we've had despite the lack of dead animal flesh on it. Mmm, dead animal flesh.

The Full Tour (Wilpattu, May 2010: Part 2)

This being our first time in the park for all of us, we had opted for the complete tour and Chamara obliged very gladly. The Villus of course are a characteristic highlight of the park, Tala Villu, Kali Villu, Maila Villu, Walas Villu, the names rolled of Chamara’s tongue as we passed the golden grass and pure white sands of the small lakes. Formed by water percolating through limestone rock to the surface, the villus are famed for their birdlife, though possibly due to the park being quite dry we didn’t see too many birds.

We didn’t see any of the legendary ‘villu elephants’ either, long touted as being the biggest elephants in Sri Lanka. In fact on our whole trip our sightings of animals were few and far between, a Monitor Lizard on its way up the evolutionary ladder, a Barking Deer standing transfixed in the road before dashing off into the undergrowth, two Sambhur watching us warily before spooking and Wild Boar trundling ahead of us. It was obvious that the animals still had a ways to go before getting used to vehicles and people.

A gloom settled over our little group as we cut across the new ‘Mannar’ road that bisects the park. Chamara was subdued as well as the personnel at the Navy checkpoint were incredibly arrogant as we tried to cross over to the other side of the park. Being used to the good manners of the forces in most other places we were a bit perturbed by this treatment and Chamara seemed to withdraw into a shell as he told us in low tones about how the Navy had started acting like they owned the park. Crossing the new road we came across more brush cleared along the track as we moved towards Kudiramale. Then we hit it, the new coastal road that the Navy had cut along the westward edge of the park. The fresh red earth gleamed like newly drawn blood across an immense expanse that stretched on either side of us. I’m not even sure how to describe what I felt then, just nausea that after all this time, the crown jewel of our parks was finally open but being pillaged at the same time.

Our mood was slightly lifted as we stopped at little bay from where we had to disembark and walk to Kudiramale Point, where Vijaya is supposed to have landed presumably in search of somewhere to party. The red soil of the area is linked with the name given to Lanka by Vijaya of Thambapanni. From the bay we walked into the shallow sea and hugged the shore to where we could ascend up the hill. The waters lapped warm and brown against our feet as fossilized coral showed just under the surface. The silence and the immobility of the small bay was a bit unnerving as we picked our way through the water and the twisted trees and we were somewhat relieved to leave the sea and start up the hill.

Of course by this time it was close to noon and soon our relief was overcome by exhaustion and a general unwillingness to go on. Of course Chamara egged us on up the cliff and we entered an eerie landscape of black heaps of stone that to me looked again like fossilized coral, though others didn’t agree. It was a fascinating experience though and I was as usual drawn to the sea. From the cliffs the waters looked at once quite shallow but a bit unnerving with Ghar fish swimming in throngs in the milky water and rocks appearing and disappearing in the murk.

A flash of bright blue alerted us to a rather incongruously new board put up by the Navy explaining the historical significance of the area with laviscous details of Kuveni’s affair with Vijaya. Well I jest but the board was somewhat interesting and I glanced at it for a few seconds before I realized the jeep was nearby along with a much needed bottle of water. And thirst trumped interest in history.

Tonight I'll be Serendib bound. That is assuming I manage to get the girls on time, with their baggage, emotional and physical, both of which teenage girls have bagfuls of.

So, in the next couple of weeks, if you see a middle aged sort of bloke dressed in clothes he shouldn't be wearing being bullied and humiliated by two teenage girls then you've either borrowed one of those dodgy films that DD watches or bumped into us. Please say hello, buy me a drink and pretend you like and/or respect me. My daughters might just be impressed.

I expect LLD will go quiet for a couple of weeks, but one never knows. I just might have plenty of time to sit and write meaningless bits and pieces.

நான் அறிவிப்பாளர்/முகாமையாளராக கடமையாற்றும் வெற்றி FM வானொலி அடங்கியுள்ள கொழும்பில் அமைந்துள்ள Voice of Asia Networks நிறுவனத்தின் மீது இன்று இனம் தெரியாத ஆயுதம் தாங்கிய காடையர் கும்பல் மேற்கொண்ட தாக்குதலில் எம் வெற்றி FM செய்திப் பிரிவு முற்றாகத் தீக்கிரையாகியுள்ளது.

இன்று அதிகாலை 1.20 அளவில் அலுவலகத்துக்குள் நுழைந்த 15 பேர் அடங்கிய முகம் மறைத்த ஆயுததாரிகள் செய்திப் பிரிவைக் குறிவைத்து,செய்திப் பிரிவு எங்கே உள்ளது என்று கேட்டு கடமையிலிருந்த வெற்றி செய்திப் பிரிவின் இரு செய்தி ஆசிரிய்ரகளைத் தாக்கிய பின் செய்தி அறைக்கு பெட்ரோல் குண்டுகளை எறிந்து, மேலும் பெட்ரோல் ஊற்றி எரித்துள்ளார்கள்.

THE CRIMINAL EXCHANGE

The legal struggles of some criminals, who were deported from Canada, are now becoming Trojan horses for so many other criminals to land back in Canada.
Few years ago there were two well known Tamil gangs in Toronto. One was identified as ``VVT`` (Velvetithurai- a Village name in Northern Sri Lanka) and the other was ``AK Kannan``. They were having a territorial drug war between each other for few years. Several shoot outs and few deaths later, both gang leaders and their supporters were arrested in a massive Police raid code named ``project 1050``. Recently a new page in these gangster stories started to dominated the Canadian media.
On June 11th 2010, Jothiravi Sittampalam the alleged leader of “AK Kannan” gang was deported to Sri Lanka by the Canadian border services due to drug trafficking and allegedly leading a criminal gang in Toronto. As soon as he landed in Sri Lanka, authorities arrested him and released him on bail and then arrested again on charges, that he collected money for Tamil Tigers during last days of the conflict. Now, his wife who still living in Toronto has filed a petition in the Canadian courts to reopen his old case, which ordered his deportation six years ago.
She is requesting Canadian immigration to bring Jothiravi Sittampalam back to Canada claiming that the Sri Lankan authorities are abusing his rights and he will be persecuted. Previously Jothiravi’s lawyer Ms. Babra Jackman a well known Canadian immigration lawyer, made sure Canadian justice system prevents his actual deportation for six years on the same ground. But at the end of Sri Lanka’s conflict, Canadian authorities decided to deport Jothiravi Sittampalam.
Before Sittampalam, there were over 100 Canadian Tamil criminals deported to Sri Lanka even during the conflict time. But this is the third time such a huge noise created on the issue on Canadian media. Among the other deportees, Kaileshan Thanabalasingham, (http://www.unhcr.org/refworld/pdfid/4716146ff.pdf) is the alleged VVT gang leader who was the opponent of Jothiravi Sittampalam in their mini drug war in Scarborough, Ontario. He was deported to Sri Lanka in 2006. But later he managed to sneak out of Sri Lanka and today he is living in Australia under different name.
Another such Canadian deportee Sanjeev Kuhendrarajah (http://www.canada.com/story.html?id=2206485 ) re-appeared in an asylum ship to Australia under the name of ``Alex``, he was deported from Canada in 2003 due to his criminal activities. Another gangster, Panchalingham Nagalingham (http://reports.fja.gc.ca/eng/2007/2007fc229/2007fc229.pdf) a member of AK Kannan Group who was deported in 2007 brought back to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2010, on the expense of Canadian Government.
In 2001, LTTE money collector Suresh Manickavasagam managed to block his deportation, just hours before his deportation to Sri Lanka. In his landmark Canadian case Suresh v. Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration), [2002] 1 S.C.R. 3 the supreme court of Canada held that, Suresh made a prima facie case that he would be subject to torture upon being returned to Sri Lanka and he will be denied the procedural fairness owed to him by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Since then all the LTTE criminals awaiting deportation used this judgment to avoid their deportation.The procedural fairness identified here is equal to the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, at the Suresh’s hearing Canadian Supreme Court never gets the chance to hear the procedural avenues available in the Sri Lankan justice system for a suspect but what the court got was, then Manickavasagam’s lawyer Ms. Babra Jackman’s interpretation on Sri Lankan justice system. Is that a correct version of Sri Lankan’s legal system? Reality is far different from Ms. Barbara’s interpretation.
If a well known criminal entered to a country especially under a deportation order of another country, he will not get all the comfort in the world; as the authorities have to make sure that the incoming criminal does not restart his criminal enterprise in the home country. It is one of the responsibilities of the governments to make sure the safety and security of the citizens in the country. Therefore it is not correct to call such procedure a persecution.
Even under section 7 of the Canadian Charter Rights and freedom the government could deprive of someone’s life, liberty and security in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice. In the same way there are enough procedural solutions available in the Sri Lankan justice system to go through if someone is arrested or deprived of their liberty. In Sittampalam`s case his relatives have the right to go through Sri Lankan justice system and ask for suitable relief from a Sri Lankan court. Instead, they chose to bash Sri Lankan justice system.
Danger is if Sittampalam`s case would have been successful, Canadian government may have to bring back most of the deported criminals from all around the world. This will put the Canadian government in a real jeopardy.

John Buchan and a life beyond letters

John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir GCMG GCVO CH PC (26 August 1875 – 11 February 1940)

The most forceful exponent of what might be termed the public school ethos in literature was, I think, a Scotsman called John Buchan. He had been to a grammar school himself, but Scottish schools of the better sort had long had a more intellectual tradition than English ones. Having gone on to Oxford, Buchan then joined the imperial enterprise in its most stylized form, as a member of what was termed Lord Milner’s ‘kindergarten’.

Milner, who governed South Africa, surrounded himself with bright young men, generally not aristocrats but those who had graduated through a public school and Oxbridge education into the ruling class. Buchan ended up his most famous product, as a writer who propagated the ethos and also as Governor General of Canada, the office he held when he died. Interestingly enough, he did his best during his tenure to assert a Canadian identity, albeit in the context of the wider British Empire. And he was one of the early proponents of a Scottish Parliament, suggesting that he had understood well that Empire, like the British ruling class, would flourish when it was not restrictive. He was a great proponent of multiculturalism and pluralism, though whether this would have extended to those with skin of a different colour, as Paul Scott was to characterize later the hump that many imperialists could never get over, is not a question that can be answered readily.

Buchan’s most famous creation was Richard Hannay, who appeared first in ‘The Thirty Nine Steps’, which can lay claim to being the first spy adventure story. It has been filmed often, and never ceases to thrill, most dramatically when Hannay believes he has escaped his pursuers because of a kindly old gentleman, who turns out to be the chief villain of the piece. I can still remember how I felt suspense mount, when I first read the book, well over forty years ago, gradually realizing that the relief Hannay felt as he turned towards his benefactor was to vanish with the understanding that he was well and truly captured.

Hannay of course lived to fight another day, going on in ‘Greenmantle’ to act as support to the theatrical Sandy Arbuthnot, who I may have confused with T E Lawrence in remembering him riding at the head of Arabs against the Turks in the First World War. ‘Mr. Standfast’, the third book in the series, was also set in the war, and had a dour hero who duly died, while the fourth book returned to intrigues in England, with a theatrical villain called Dominic Medina, who took three hostages for ransom. I believe there was an element of anti-semitism in the book, highlighting the different approaches to the post-War situation of different elements in the British establishment. The paternalism imperialists, such as Curzon, Milner’s Indian counterpart, lost out to the more ruthlessly self-interested such as Balfour and Churchill, who realized the importance of the great Jewish financial houses, and the role they ironically could play in a world order to be dominated by Anglo-Saxons.

The last Hannay adventure retreats to a distant Scottish island where Sandy Arbuthnot reclaims his position as a Scottish laird. Meanwhile Buchan had developed two other distinctively Scottish characters who were the heroes of two other series. One was a Glaswegian grocer called Dickson McCunn, who has at his beck and call a group of street urchins known as the Gorbal Die-Hards. After their first appearance in Scotland, they migrate to Eastern Europe, to a world of castles set on mountain crags and royal families riven by rivalries which can only be resolved by British interventions. The prototype was Antony Hope’s ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’, which gave the name Ruritania to this world. Buchan, it should be noted, took the genre to splendid heights of absurdity, when Dickson McCunn appeared swathed in purple as a substitute for a Roman type emperor, in ‘The House of the Four Winds’.

Buchan’s other hero was as unlikely, an elderly lawyer called Edward Leithen, whose most famous exploits were as a poacher, in ‘John MacNab’, which is about three such respectable gentlemen taking bets that they can get away with illicit game shooting on the country estate of an acquaintance. The book was also a vehicle for Buchan to write loving descriptions of Scottish highland scenery, a task in which he excelled, as I realized again when I was on a writing residency at Hawthornden Castle and thought the walks on the estate familiar – though in reality I am sure those comparatively modest slopes were nothing like as dramatic as the high hills on which Sir Edward Leithen pursued stags.

The other book which featured this strange hero that I remember was called ‘The Gap in the Curtain’, and was about a psychic who used his powers to enable five men to see a year into the future. The effort was so intense, that the psychic died in the process, and two of the men saw in the Times of a year hence notices of their own deaths. I cannot remember what was foreseen by two of the others, but the last man saw the increased usefulness of a particular metal, which he then proceeded to buy up so that he had a monopoly – only to see his efforts wasted and his money lost when a young American chemist produced a synthetic variety.

Of the two men who saw their own deaths foretold, one was so upset that he wasted away and duly died. The other nearly went the same way but, fortified by love, decided he would live on manfully, and was rewarded when the notice turned out to refer to a cousin of the same name. Such plotting suggests why Buchan cannot really be described as a great writer, but the tale was gripping in the telling, and recalling my involvement while reading them – this particular book I read in the Government Agent’s Lodge in Kandy, a large rambling house which now alas is used for office as well as residence for the Governor – I feel it a waste that his novels are hardly known to new generations.

It was Penguin I think that decided in the sixties to reissue ten of his books, the five Hannay ones, the three involving Dickson McCunn, ‘John Macnab’ and, not ‘The Gap in the Curtain’ which I found in a separate edition, but Buchan’s autobiography, which is called ‘Memory Hold the Door’. I read that up on Kirk Oswald Estate in Bogawantalawa, all alone in one wing of the large L-shaped bungalow, while my host and his family were in the other wing, and I stayed up till nearly four to finish it. The book was a fascinating account of a life of continuing effort and imagination, which took him from a modest Scottish childhood through the educational excellence of a grammar school to Oxford and the immense opportunities that opened up. He wrote too of Milner’s proconsular world, of journalism in London and then a stint in the war, and then an administrative career that culminated in his being the King’s Representative in Canada – which involved some nifty public relations work when Edward VIII had to abdicate and be replaced by his comparatively dull brother.

I have no doubt that it was because of his writing that I have included John Buchan here. But it is nevertheless fascinating that he should also have lived a life that exemplified so much of what he celebrated in his books.

Geoffrey Bawa Awards for Architecture 2010 /2011 Launched in Colombo

Convened by the Geoffrey Bawa Trust, a media briefing was held in Colombo to launch Geoffrey Bawa Awards for Architecture 2010/2011 on July 23, 2010 at the late Architect’s residence, who would have celebrated his 91st birthday on the same day.

Architect Channa Daswatte and Ms. Sunethra Bandaranaike addressed the media on the background of the Awards and submission details, as well as what the Awards mean not only to Architects, but also to the society of Sri Lanka.

Applications are called from contenders to the Award on the prescribed forms available at the offices of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust and will be available from the July 23, 2010 from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. and on week days thereon from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Documents should be submitted by November 15, 2010. Once again the award will be a sum of one million rupees and the winner chosen from the shortlist of 10 announced in May 2011. The winner will be announced at a gala event held on July 23, 2011 – Geoffrey Bawa’s 92nd birth anniversary, where the renowned author Michael Ondaatje has agreed to make the keynote address.

The judges will be Suhanya Raffel (Trustee of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust and Deputy Director Curatorial and Collection development at the Queensland Art Gallery in Brisbane Australia), Archt. Kerry Hill, Singapore, Archt. Jayantha Perera (Immediate Past President and nominee of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects) and Mr. Ajita de Costa (Textile technologist, industrialist and heritage conservationist).

The Geoffrey Bawa Trust will embark on a national Awards scheme for the second time to recognize and reward outstanding architectural work for architecture in Sri Lanka. The main objective of the Awards is to provide national recognition to the professionals and their contribution to the community and the Country. By honouring them, the Trust will help them advance in their careers and personal networks and provide significant profiling and visibility so as to create additional opportunities and exposure to them through their association “With the world renowned name Geoffrey Bawa”.

The Award, is open to all Sri Lankans and seeks out the broadest possible range of architectural interventions. The Award specifically hopes to encourage and learn more about the works of younger architects while being a forum for emerging talent. There are no fixed criteria as to the size, type, nature or location of project. The awards embraces all kinds of building projects ranging from modest small scale interventions to major complexes in housing and urban complexes that keeps a focus on the community and its neighborhoods. The Geoffrey Bawa Awards scheme has been consciously modeled on the scheme, which is run by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Geneva. That is generally acknowledged to have had a very marked effect on architecture in developing countries since it was inaugurated by His Highness The Aga Khan in 1977 and has now completed eleven of its three- year cycles. The Trust also acknowledges the importance of the honour, that was bestowed upon Deshamanya Bawa when he received The Aga Khan’s Special Award for a Lifetime’s Achievement in Architecture in 2001.

Geoffrey Bawa is now recognized as having been one of the greatest Asian architects of the second half of the Twentieth Century and one of the most significant Sri Lankans of his generation. With his small group of talented assistants and his circle of creative friends and collaborators, he established a whole canon of prototypes for new buildings in newly independent Sri Lanka.

During a career that spanned forty years Bawa designed about thirty hotels, of which fourteen were realized, twelve of them in Sri Lanka. The Bentota Beach and Serendib hotels were the first purpose-built hotels to be built in the island and they set the standards for the rest to follow. Both contributed immeasurable to the image of Sri Lanka that was projected to the rest of the world. Many Guide Books to the island now include his buildings as “must see” places and rate his hotels as the best on the island.

Prabhakaran’s successor, T. S. Pathmanathan or simply ‘KP’ as he is better known has thrown his weight behind Sri Lanka’s post-LTTE efforts to restore peace in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

In an exclusive interview with The Island in Colombo yesterday (28), Pathmanathan, former confidant of the slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and the outfit’s main arms procurer, discussed a wide range of issues, including his capture last August, breakdown of various attempts to negotiate peace and a desperate bid to thwart annihilation of the LTTE‘s military leadership in May 2009.

Pathmanathan, in a light brown kurta, black slacks and matching shoes could have easily walked the streets of the city without being identified as one of the key LTTE leaders, who had helped build the organisation as a ruthlessly efficient terrorist group over the past three decades. He sat on a couch asking the writer to fire away in what turned out to be a three-hour interview in which he spelt out his plans in support of on-going rebuilding efforts of the government.

The onetime most elusive man from Jaffna said he was confident that a group of likeminded Tamils based in various parts of the world would support the initiative for the benefit of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Fielding questions with a smile, KP said what he expected of the Tamil Diaspora and what the Diaspora expected of him was to step up the rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement programmes now underway.

Born on April 6, 1955, KP had played different roles before succeeding Velupillai Prabhakaran after the latter’s death at the hands of the Sri Lanka Army on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon in May last year.

Excerpts of the interview:

Q: Are you confident that the Tamil Diaspora could work with President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government?

A: President Rajapaksa is genuine in his efforts to settle differences among communities and help re-build war devastated regions in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. Within a year of the conclusion of the war, the majority of the people displaced by the conflict are back at their villages and ex-combatants of the LTTE are undergoing rehabilitation and the international community, too, is supportive of Sri Lanka’s efforts. None of these would have been possible without the political leadership given by President Rajapaksa.

KP said it was essential for the Tamil Diaspora to realise the ground reality in a post-LTTE era and review its strategy to meet the new challenges. He said he had stepped in as he felt there was a leadership vacuum to be filled. Emphasising his determination to go ahead with what he called a tangible action plan, the LTTE veteran said everybody should have come forward and assist in the rebuilding efforts without trying to live in the past. The media should play a positive role in the post-LTTE period and strengthen the ongoing reconciliation efforts. Nothing could be as bad as negative reporting, though no one would dispute the right of the media to cover any issue the way it deemed fit, KP said. However, he said their focus should be on development and peace building efforts such as rebuilding, speedy resettlement of the war displaced and rehabilitation of ex-combatants.

Q: You recently set up an NGO to collect money from the Tamil Diaspora to help the re-building process. Would the Diaspora respond to your move as there were others who claimed to represent the interests of the LTTE?

A: The North-East Rehabilitation and Development Organisation (NERDO) is ready to play a key role in the rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement processes. With its main office situated at No 10, 1st Lane, Kathiresu Road, Vairavaputiyankulam, Vavuniya, NERDO is engaged in various activities in support of the Tami speaking people. We are only concerned about the welfare of the people, particularly children, though some seek fresh funding to cause mayhem. People are fed up with war and every effort should be made to alleviate the suffering of the people without playing politics with a purely humanitarian issue. We are appealing for funds - -$1 from each Tamil living abroad on a monthly basis. Q: What was the turning point in the eelam war IV?

A: Multi-pronged Al-Qaeda 9/11 attack on the US changed it all. Within 24 hours, the international community led by Western powers moved against all armed groups causing immense damage to our operations. There are many other factors, but the primary reason is nothing but the rapid rise of Al-Qaeda, which prompted the West to change its attitude. This brought about a drastic change in the attitude of political leaders in the other parts of the world. Circumstances made propagation of separatist sentiments extremely difficult in many parts of the world. Unfortunately, an influential section of the LTTE, including its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran did not realize the urgent need to change its strategy. Had he done that the situation would have been different today. There is a New World Order today, which does not tolerate armed campaigns and that is the hard reality.

Q: Are you satisfied with the progress in resettlement and reconstruction following the conclusion of war in May last year?

A: The situation is much better than I expected. Although, there is lot to be done by way of confidence building, we should appreciate what the government has done since the conclusion of the war. The Tamil community should not solely depend on the government, UN agencies and NGOs for their needs. We have a duty by the people to act swiftly and decisively to bring immediate relief to war affected people. During a recent visit to the North, we had an opportunity to provide immediate assistance to several hundreds of GCE (Advanced Level) students sitting for the forthcoming examination. No one would have believed a common programme involving the Tamil Diaspora and the government was possible, but today we are cooperating with the government and working for the people. We are already receiving requests for assistance from the Tamil community, a case in point being that two school principals recently obtained financial assistance for students who needed to pay for examination papers at term tests.

Now that the war is over, we can go flat out to implement development programmes. Recently, we donated Rs. 500,000 for the provision of buns and tea for the Advanced Level students at the Sundaralingham Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Vavuniya, sitting for examination in August.

Q: When did you first hear of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s death on the Vanni front? Where were you at the time of the final battle?

A: I was abroad when I first heard of Prabhakaran’s death on May 19. The international press reported the final confrontation, though some continued to dispute the fact. I was Prabhakaran’s best friend and felt sad about the loss of his life. Had he listened to me and reached an agreement with the government before it was too late, the final battle could have been avoided. The LTTE suffered a massive setback on May 10 on the Vanni (east) front, where some 400 experienced cadres perished while trying to break the army lines. Following that tragedy, I discussed with the then political chief Nadesan a way out of the quagmire. But unfortunately they believed the army could be somehow forced to stop the offensive and a deal worked out through a third party. We also talked to various people and organizations, including the UN in a bid to work out some arrangement but nothing happened due to the failure on the part of Prabhakaran to make his move earlier.

Q: When did you first leave Sri Lanka? When did you last visit Sri Lanka before being taken in abroad shortly after the end of war?

A: I fled to India with Prabhakaran in 1980. The military searched for me and arrested me forcing me to think of my future. Intensified military activity demoralized the community. When the pressure was mounting, we took a boat from Valvettiturai and sought refuge in India. At that time crossing the Indo-Lanka maritime boundary was no problem. The then TULF leader A. Amirthalingham introduced me to Prabhakaran in mid 70s, most probably in 1976 and since then we worked together. At that time TELO and the LTTE were the dominant militant groups and they worked with the Jaffna-based political leadership for the eelam project. I studied at Mahajana College, Jaffna but gave up University education to fight for our rights, which we believed were violated by successive governments. But today we are in a unique position to bring about a permanent peace in not only Northern and Eastern Provinces but the entire country.

Following the then Jaffna Mayor Alfred Duraiappah’s killing by Prabhakaran, the decision makers of the politico-militant movement at that time had removed Prabhakaran from the outfit. When he came to me, I was just an Advanced Level student, though I had to accommodate him in my room. There had been moves to kill him by some individuals, including the then TELO leader Thangadurai.

Branding: What Matters Most?

Branding; whether it is corporate or personal, is an art of managing what people 'think' and 'say' about you or your brand. In that sense, what matters most in branding? Here is my formula.

What matters most is what you think who you are. What matters next is what others say who you are. What matters least is what you 'say' who you are.

Unfortunately, most brands (personal or corporate) go on the exact opposite order of priority. They weight, 'what I say, who I am' as the most important factor in branding. Just look at an average TV commercial you see every day. It is guaranteed to be full of all 'self centric' corporate crap. Then talk (or chat) to an average 'personal brand' you know for quite a sometime. Again, you are most likely to be bombarded by a string of self-centric explanations of 'what I can do, and what I am planning to do'. Does this really matter?

Who I am? What Do I do?

I believe, before building any brand (personal or corporate) you have to be honest to yourself and answer the first question. "Who am I? What do I do?". Be honest as much as possible, and get a clear idea about what you think as the reason for your (or your brand's) existence. Because this understanding of ‘what is your stand among other brands’ is important for you to be in focus of what you are suppose to do best. If you know for sure what you stand for, then the competitor’s moves will not distract you.

Yes, it does matter a lot what others say about you (your brand). ‘What others say’ will immensely contribute to the positioning you or your brand is going to earn in the mind of customers. Mind you that, your customers will believe what others say about you, than what you say about you yourself. Isn't this the whole point of social media and word of mouth obsession? Marketers are going after social media this fanatically, because they know the importance of ‘what other people talk’ about you. So, in practice the old self centric and individualistic arguments like 'I don't care what others say about me or what they think of me, I'll do what ever I want to do' becomes no more relevant, if you are truly aspire to build a strong personal or corporate brand identity.

In essence, you have to listen to ‘what others say about you’ more actively and make sure they say good things about you. If you want others (your customers) to talk good about you, you have to be empathetic with them and their needs. Do not be so self centric and opportunistic, to sell something always to those who listen to you. Instead, take some time and see if you have been able to solve a problem for them, or if you have made them feel better. Think about that, if you have given your followers, fans, customers enough opportunities to talk to you.

So isn't it the right time to have a re-look at your communication to the world? Are you talking too much of yourself, without even taking a breath and letting yourself listening to what others say about you?

Take out all your marketing communication messages and see if this is the case with your brand's communication to the world. Now, this will be the starting point of a real social media branding strategy.

පිස්සා රොබින් හුඩ් ගැන ලියපු ලිපිය දැකලා මාත් කමෙන්ට් එකක් දාන්න ලෑස්ති වුනා. මොකද මේ ගැන පොඩි කතා දෙක තුනක්ම ලියන්න තරම් අත්දැකීම් මටත් තියෙනවා. ඒත් ලියන්න පටන් ගත්තම විස්තරේ දිග වැඩි වුන නිසා වෙනම බ්ලොග් සටහනක් විදියට දැම්මනම් හොඳයි කියලා හිතුනා… මේ කතා මතක් වෙන්න මුල් වුන පිස්සට ස්තුති කරලම පටන් ගන්නම්.

මට මතක හැටියට Robin of Sherwood මුලින්ම පෙන්නුවේ මම 2 වසරේ ඉද්දී 1987දි විතර. වෙලාවනම් ඉරිදා රෑ 7ට වෙන්න ඕන. පළවෙනි කොටස බැලුවේ අහම්බෙන්. ඊට පස්සේ එක කොටසක්වත් මිස් කරන්නේ නැතුව බැලුවා.

ඒ කාලේ ලංකාවෙ තිබුනේ TV Channel 2යි. වෙන බලන්න දේවල් ඒ තරම් නොතිබුන නිසාද, ළමයින්ට දැනට වඩා නිදහසක් තිබුන නිසාද මන්දා අපි හැමෝගෙම හිත්වලට තදින්ම කා වැදුනා මේ TV series එක. පහු ‍කාලෙකදි කැම්පස් එකෙන් එහෙම හමු වුන යාලුවො නිසා දැන ගත්තා ලංකාව පුරාම අපේ වයස්වල (±5) හැමෝගෙම වගේ ජීවිතවලට මේ කතාව ගොඩක් බලපාල තියෙන බව.

රොබින් මැරෙන එක ගැන කියවද්දියි මතක් වුනේ… ඔය කතාවෙ තියෙනවනේ රොබින් හුඩ් මැරුනම රොබට් කියල වෙන හාදයෙක් රොබින් හුඩ්ගෙ අනුප්‍රාප්තිකයා හෙවත් රොබින් හුඩ් II විදියට වැඩ කරනවා. ඔය කාලේ මගේ යාලුවො කිවුවෙ රොබින් හුඩ්ලා 7 දෙනෙක් වෙනකම් එනවා කියලයි. ඒ කාලෙ ඉතින් ජංජාලෙ, wikipedia එහෙම තිබුනෙත් නෑනේ. ඒ නිසා මාත් රොබින් හුඩ්ලා 7 දෙනාගෙ කතාව හිස් මුදුනින් පිලි අරන් හිටියේ. හික්. හික්…

පිස්සයි, සහනුයි වගේම මාත් දුනු ඊතල හදාගෙන සෙල්ලම් කළා සෑහෙන කාලයක් යනකම්ම. ඔය life size දුනු ඊතල හැදිල්ලෙන් පස්සෙ මම miniature ඒවා හදන්නත් පුරුදු වුනා. ඒ කිවුවේ දුන්නක් 150mm විතර වෙන්න… ඔය සයිස් එකට හැදුවම performance අඩු වුනත්, බෑග් එකේ දාගෙන ඉස්කෝලෙ ගෙනියන්න පුලුවන්නේ… ඒකයි.

ඊලඟට Robin of Sherwood බැලුවේ 1995දි විතර. ඒ සැරේ පෙන්නුවේ සිකුරාදා රෑ 7ට වෙන්න ඕන. පළවෙනි සැරේ බලලා අවුරුදු 7ක් ගියත් දෙවෙනි සැරේ බලනකොටත් කතාව මතක තිබුනා. ඒත් ඒ සැරෙත් මුලු series එකම ආසාවෙන් බැලුවා.

ඔය සැරේ බලද්දි තමයි මට තේරුනේ මැරියන්, රොබින් හුඩ් living together කියලා. 2 වසරේ ඉද්දි ඕවා තේරෙන එකක්යැ. හිකිස්.

ඒ විතරක්යැ. මගේ පන්තියෙ යාලුවෙකුටත් 11 වසරෙදි විතර හිතුනනෙ අපේ පන්තිවලට ආපු ගෑනු දැරිවියකගෙ පෙනුම මැරියන් වගේ කියලා. ඕක ගැනත් රසවත් කතන්දර ‍ගොඩක් තියෙනවා.

ඔහොම දෙපාරක් රොබින් හුඩ් බැලුවට පස්සේ නියම වැඩක් වුනේ. ඉබ්බට වෙච්ච දේම තමයි. කතාව හොඳටම මතක තිබුන නිසා ආයිත් සැරයක් බලන්න එපා වුනා මට.

ඒත් කතාවෙ background music එකටයි, සිංදුවලටයි තිබුන ආසාව අඩු වුනේ නෑ. ජංජාලෙ පාවිච්චි කරන්න හුරු වුනාට පස්සේ රොබින් හුඩ් සිංදු ටික හොයා ගත්තා සෑහෙන ගේමක් දීලා. තාමත් ආසයි. ඒවටනම්. කතාවෙ තේමා වාදනයනම් මෙතනත් තියෙනවා. ඔය සිංදු නිසාම මට පහු කාලෙකදි සෙල්ටික් සංගීතය ගැනත් කැමැත්තක් ආවා.

මං හිතන්නෙ 2007දි විතර ආයිත් පාරක් රොබින් හුඩ් පෙන්නන්න ඇති. ඔය කාලෙ අපේ මල්ලි කෙනෙක් එක විෂයකට එයාගෙ අනිත් යාලුවො ටික යන A/L tuition class එකට නොගිහිං යාලුවො නොයන වෙන පන්තියකට ගියා. මල්ලි ගිය පන්තිය තිබිලා තියෙන්නේ රොබින් හුඩ් තිබුන වෙලාවෙමලු. ඉතිං අර යාලුවො ටික දවසක් මේ මල්ලිට බැනලා තියෙන්නේ, “උඹ ඔය කරන වැඩෙන් අන්තිමේදි ඒ ලෙවලුත් නෑ. රොබින් හුඩ්නුත් නෑ” කියලලු.

සමරු සටහන් පොත්වල නිතර ලියවුන “Nothing is Ever Forgotten!” කෑල්ලත් ආවේ රොබින් හුඩ් එකෙන් කියලයි මටනම් හිතෙන්නේ.

ෂර්වුඩයේ රොබින් කතා පෙළ ගැන වැඩි විස්තර මෙතනින් බලා ගන්න පුලුවන්.

I’ve always been charmed by the ease with which you can install an app in linux. I open the Ubuntu Software Centre (my system being Ubuntu) and enter a search term for the kind of app i’m looking for and click install. It’s similar to installing an app from the Apple App Store. And there’s an app for everything, too!

පසුගිය රාත්‍රියේ මා විසින් ලියන රැග අරඹයා ලියන ලද කවක් හේතුවෙන් එය UCSC එකට අදාලව ලියවුණු ලෙසට වටදවා වටහාගෙන ඇත. ස්වභාවිකවම ගලාගෙන එන මගේ කර්කශ ආඛ්‍යාන රටාව හේතුවෙන් එවන් හැඟිමක් තවත් ඉල්පී පැමීනීමට පිළිවන. මාගේ අරමුණ වූයේ යම් ඉතා සුලූ පිරිසක් රැග අනවශ්‍ය ලෙස භාවිත කිරීම කර්කශ ලෙස හෙළා දැකීමයි. UCSC වන අප හට පවතින සංස්කෘතිය අනෙක් විශ්ව විද්‍යාල සංස්කෘතීන් මෙන් කිසිදු සැඟවුණු න්‍යාය පත්‍රයන්ගෙන් තොර ඉතා විනිවිද භාවයෙන් යුක්ත වූවකි. කිසිවෙකුට කඩේ නොයන UCSC සංස්කෘතියේ අභිමානය දරා ගත හැකි නොවූ අන්තරේ නරි රැලක් හූ තියා තමන්ගේම වලිග කපා ගත්හ.

මා UCSC වූ නියාවෙන් මවිසින් ලියන දේ UCSC පොදු මතය නොවේ(එමෙන්ම මා කිසිවෙකුගේ පෙළබවීමක් මතද කිසිවක් ලියන්නෙ නැත). UCSC අප හට විවිධ මත දැරීමට අයිතිය සලසා ඇත. නමුත් සමස්තයක් ලෙස ගත් කල UCSC අපි සියල්ලන්ම යම් යම් දේ පිළිබද එක් ආස්ථානයක් දරන්නෙමු. කඩේ නොයාම එවන්නකි, රටේ විවිද ප්‍රදේශ වලින් UCSCයට අලුතින් පැමිනෙන නංගිලා මල්ලිලා මෙම සරල නමුත් මානුෂිය සංස්ක්කෘතියට අනුගත කල යුතුය යන්නත් එවන්නකි. සහෝදරත්වය, සහජීවනත්වය යන ඒවා UCSC අපිට හුදු වචනාර්ථයන් නොවේ. අපගේ අයියලා අක්කලා ඒවා යථාර්තයන් බවට පත් කර ඇත.

මා විසින් පුද්ගලික අත්දැකීමකින් ලියන ලද එකී කවිය අසාර්තක නිර්මාණයක් ලෙස මම දකිමි. මා හට පාඨකයා වෙත ලඟා කරවීමට උවමනා කල අත්දැකීම එම කවියෙන් පාඨකයා වෙත විකෘති ලෙස ගෙන ගොස් ඇතැයි සිටමි. එහෙයින් වරද මාගේ එනම් මා ලිවීමට භාවිතා කල ආඛ්‍යාන රටාවේ වරදක් ලෙස සිතමි. එහෙයින් මම මාගේ නිර්මාණය නිසාවෙන් සිත් තැවුලට පත් මා ඉතා ගෞරව කරන පුද්ගලයන්ගෙන් සමාව ඉල්ලමි.

ගුරු කම ගැන ලියන්න තරම් මම එහි කෙල පැමිණියෙක්වත් අත්දැකීම් සමුදායක් තිබෙන අයෙක්වත් නම් නෙමෙයි තවම. ඒත් පුංචි හිත් වලට එබී බලමින් ටික කලක් උන්නු කෙනෙක් හැටියට සටහනක් ලියන්න තරම් ප්‍රමාණවත් සිද්දි ටිකක් හිතේ පෙල ගැහී ඉන්නව.

මේ රට ඇතුලේ ගුරු වෘත්තියට ආ යුතු සරලතම සහ පහසුතම මග ඔස්සේමයි මාත් මීට අවතීර්ණ උනේ. උපාධියට පින් සිද්ද වෙන්න, රස්සාවක් හොයා ගන්න තිබ්බ උවමනාව, තදියම නිසා. ඇත්ත තමයි ඒක. ඊට මම ආවෙත් ඒ මොහොතේ උපාධිය සම්පූර්ණ නොකර ඉගෙනගනිමින් උන් මට, අනාගත රස්සා අවදානම අවම කර ගන්න, යා හැකි හොඳම රක්සාව එය නිසා. මට මොහොතකටවත් ඕනේ උනේ නෑ ගුරුවරියක් වෙන්න. උගන්නන්න. ඒත් වෙන එකක් හම්බ වෙනකන් කියල ‍රැඳුනා මේ රස්සාවෙ මුලදි. ඔන්න ඔහොමයි ආගමනය උනේ.

කල් යන්න යන්න , විවිධ පරාස වල ලමයින් හමු වෙන්න වෙන්න, එක් එක් වයස් වල ලමයින් සමග අදහස් බෙදා ගන්න ගන්න, මටම දැනෙන්න ගත්තා මම මේ වටපිටාවට, මේ සේවයට ආදරය කරන බව. කල් යද්දි, කතාවට හුරු වෙද්දි, ඒ මනස් සමග ගනුදෙනු කරද්දි මට මොකක්දෝ සුන්දරත්වයක් පේන්න ගත්ත. මිතුරු හැඟීමක්, සැනසිලිදායක මනසක්, වැඩක් කරනව පමණක්ම නොවී ජීවිතය බෙදා හදා ගන්නා වගේ හැඟීමක් හිතට එන්න ගත්ත මේ කරන දේවල් වලින්. ඒ නිසාම වෙන්න ඇති මම පතපු බොහෝ දුර යා හැකි ‍රැකියාවකටත් පයින් ගහල ආයෙමත් ආවෙ මේ රස්සාවේ ආසාවට ඉන්න බැරිව...ඔහොම ගිහින් ඉතින් බොලේ අද මම ගුරු සේවයෙම නතර වෙලා. (අනේ හැබැයි එකක් කියන්නම්, මම මල් ඔසරිය අරං , පොත් මිටිය තුරුලු කරං කොන්ඩයක් බැඳන් ඉස්කෝලෙ යන කෙනෙක් නම් නෙමෙයි... ඇත්ත කියන්න එපැයි.. නැත්නම් එහෙම හිතා ගන්න ඔබට අසාධාරණයක් වෙනව... මම ෆුල් නෝර්මල් කිටක් ගහගෙන , තොරතුරු තාක්සනේ උගන්නන, සංකර ඉස්කෝලෙකට උගන්නන්න යන ටීචර් කෙනෙක්) මම මොන වගේ උනත් ගුරු සේවය කියන්නේ එකම සේවයක්.. මට අද ලියන්න හිතුනේ ඒ ගැන...

පන්තියට ගිහින් කලු ලෑල්ලක සටහන් ලියල පාඩමක් කියා දෙන්න ඕනේම කෙනෙකුට බැරි බව ඇත්ත. පාඩමක් කියා දෙන්න ඇහැකි අධ්‍යාපන සුදුසුකම් තියන ඕනේම කෙනෙකු ගුරුවරියක් වෙන එක පිලිගත හැකිද? මම මේ මගේ මාලු මගේ ඇඟේම තියන් කපන්නේ... කාරි නෑ.

ගුරුවරයෙක් දැනුමින් පිරිපුන් වෙන්න ඕනේ.උගත් වෙන්න ඕනේ.. විෂය දැන ගන්න ඕනේ... ඒක ඇත්ත.. ඒත් ඒ ඇතිද ? නෑ මදි මදි...

වෙලාවට නිර්දේශය ඉවර කරන්න, පොත් බලන්න , සටහන් දෙන්න, ලමයි අහන ප්‍රශ්න වලට උත්තර දෙන්න, ලමයින්ව 'පාලනය' කර ගන්න... ඒවත් ඕනැනෙ... එත් ඒ ඇතිද ? 'මදි'

දරුවෙකුගේ ජීවිතයට පරමාදර්ශ සපයන්න හැකි වෙන්නෙ දෙමාපියන්ට සහ ගුරුවරුන්ට. ඒ පරමාදර්ශී ගුරුවරයෙකුට පුලුවන් යාලුවන්ගෙන් පරාමදර්ශ නොසොයන නියම පෞරුෂයක් හදන්න දරුවෙක් තුල. ඒ පරමාදර්ශ ගැන මම සරලව කතාවට බහින්නම්...

හදවතින්ම ආදරය දෙන්න ... කරුණාව නෙමෙයි.. ආදරය දෙන්න...
දරුවෙකුට දෙයක් හිසට ඔබන්න හැකි එකම මන්තරය තමයි ආදරය. මේ මම නම් තදින්ම අදහන දෙයක්. සෙනෙහසින් කියන ඕනෙම දෙයක් ඕන දඟයෙක් අහනව. රවා බලනවට, සැර වැර කරනවට මේ පොඩිහිටියෝ කැමති නෑ. ලොකු සිසුවන් ගැන නම් කියන්න තියෙන්නෙ , අනිත් යාලුවො ඉස්සරහ විහිලුවක්වත් කරනවට එයාල කැමති නෑ. දඬුවමකින් හදන්න බැරි දරදඬු ලමෙක්ව මෙල්ල කරගන්න පුලුවන් පූස් පැටියෙක් තරමටම, ආදරේ පෙන්නීමෙන්... 'ආදරනීය ගුරුතුමනි'හි බ්‍රෙත්වේට් ගුරුතුමා නොසන්ඩාලයින් ‍රැලක් යැයි හංවඩු ගැසූ කොලු කෙලි ‍රැලක් මෙල්ල කලේ වන කිසිවකින් නෙමෙයි.. ආදරයෙන්...!

සිනහ වෙන්න... හදවතින්ම
සිනහවෙන ගුරුවරුන්ට දරුවො ආසයි. ඒ ගුරුවරුන්ගේ විෂයන්ට තමයි ඕනෙම දරුවෙක් ප්‍රියතම විෂයන් කියන්නේ. කියන්නත් පුදුමයි, ඒ ගුරුවරුන්ගේ විෂයන්ට තමයි ඒ දරුවො වැඩිපුරම දස්කම් දක්වන්නෙත්.. දරුවන්ට දැනෙන්න ආදරේ කරන රහස තියෙන්නෙ ගුරුවරු ගාව. එකිනෙකාගෙ ඇස් දිහා බලල කතා කරනවට, ලඟට ගිහින් කතා කරනවට, ආදරය දයාව පෙන්වනවට, මේ පුංචි හිත් හරිම ආසයි. සිනහ නොවෙන ගුරුවරුන්ට හරිම අමාරුයි ලමුන් පාලනය කර ගන්න...රවා බලද්දි, බය කරද්දි, සැර කරද්දි ලමුන් එක් අවස්ථාවකදි මෙල්ල වෙනව. ඒත් ඒ බයෙන් ගැහෙන හිතක , අප කියා දෙන පාඩමක් පැලපදියම් වේවිද?

පොඩි උන්ගේ ආත්ම ගෞරවය රකින්න...
මේ පොඩිහිටියන්ට මහ අමුතු මාන්නයක් තියනව. හැමෝම වගේ එයාලත් ආස නෑ එයාලට අපහාස කරනවට. එතකොට වැ‍රැද්දක් පහදන්නෙ කොහොමද ? පෞද්ගලිකව ඇමතීම තමයි මට නම් අත්දැකීමෙන් පෙනිච්ච හොඳම ක්‍රමය. එයාලව පංතිය ඉස්සරහ අපහසුතාවයට පත් කරන්න මොහොතකට පෙර හිතන්න එයාලගෙ පෞරුෂය ඔබ සහමුලින්ම සිඳ දානව වෙන්න පුලුවන්.. බලාගෙනයි!

උන්ට නිදහස දෙන්න...
ය කරල නිශ්ශබ්දව බිරන්තට්‍ටු වෙලා බලා ඉන්න ලමයි ‍රැලකට උගන්නවට වඩා හොඳ නැද්ද කොයි වෙලෙත් අත් උස්සගෙන ප්‍රශ්න අහන , හිනා වෙන, කතා කරන සක්‍රිය හිස් ගෙඩි ටිකක් එක්ක සංවාදයේ යෙදෙන එක? ඔයාල අහවි 'එතකොට මුන්ට මුකුත් උගන්නන්න බැහැනේ' කියල. නෑ පුලුවන්.. ගුරුවරයෙකු අතින් පාලිත විනයකට වඩා හෙමි හෙමි ක්‍රම ක්‍රමයෙන් තම තමුන් ගොඩ නගන පාලිත නිදහස හොඳ නැද්ද? පුලුවන්.. මෙය කරන්න පුලුවන්.. උන්ගේ නිදහසේ ලියලන සිතුවිලි වලට ඉරි ගහල කො‍ටු කරල අනාගත කලාකරුවන්, දාර්ශනිකයින්, ගයකයින්, විද්‍යාඥයින්,වෙදැදුරන් උපන් ගෙයි මරා දාන්න එපා. උන් බැඳිල නෑ අපි කියන දේ අහන්න. අපි බැඳිල ඉන්නව උන්ට ඕනේ ලෝකෙට පාර පෙන්නන්න..'හරි පුදුම ඉස්කෝලෙ' ඉන්න කොබයාශි ගුරුතුමා ඒ දඟකාරිගෙ ටොට්ටෝ චං ගේ අනාගතය කවම කවදාවත් වෙනස් කරන්න හැදුවෙ නෑ....විනාඩි 40ක් නැත්නම් 50ක් අමාරුවෙන් අපි කියන දේ අහන් ඉඳලා මුලු අනාගතයම අඳුරට ඇදගන්න පරපුරක් තැනීමේ පාපකර්මයට අපිට වන්දි ගෙවන්න හැකි වේවිද??

පාඩම විතරක් නෙමෙයි, ජීවිතේ කියා දෙන්න...
පාඩම ඉගෙන ගන්නෙ මොලයක්.. පොඩි මොලයක්. මේ පොඩි මොලේ හිස් ඉඩකඩ අංශු දාස් ගානක් තියනව ආදරේ කරන ගුරුවරයෙකුගෙ මුවින් පිටවෙන ජීවන අදර්ශ හිසට ඔබා ගන්න බලාගෙන ඉන්න.... ඒ වටින කියන පිවිතුරු සෛල ටික හිස් හිදැස් තියල උන්ව පංතියෙන් එලියට යවන්න එපා. යාලු වෙස් ගත් පාප මිත්‍රයො මනස්ගාත වලින් පුරවන්න කලින්, ඒව ජීවිතේ ගැන ලස්සන සිතුවිලි වලින්, දැක්මකින් පුරවල සමාජෙට යවන්න.

හරි හත‍රැස් කො‍ටු අස්සෙන් නැතුව ජීවිතේට එබෙන්න කියා දෙන්න..
අපි දකින , උන් නොදකින ලෝකයට එබෙන්න උන්ට අයිතියක් තියනව. ඒ ලෝකෙ පෙන්නන්න අපිට යුතුකමක් වගකීමක් තියනව. උන්ගේ ගෙවල් දොරවල් අස්සෙ තියන, කියා ගන්න තේරෙන්නෙ නැති, කියන්න බැරි, දාහකුත් එකක් හැල හැප්පිලි කියා ගන්න බැරිවෙනකොට චන්ඩියො බිහි වෙනව අහිංසක හිත් අස්සෙන්. ඒ වලක්වන්න හැකි මන්ත්‍රයත් ගුරුවරයෙකුගේ සෙනෙහස, ආදරය, ලෙංගතුකම. ඒ ආදරේට පුලුවන් චන්ඩි හිතක බෝ පැලයක් පැලකරන්න. ඒ වගේ හිතකින් පුලුවන් ගිනි ගන්න අම්මෙක් තාත්තෙක්ව නිවන්න. හැම දේකම තුන් පැත්තක් තිබෙන්න හැකි බව උන්ට කියා දෙන්න. අපිට පෙනෙන පැත්ත, උන්ට පෙනෙන පැත්ත හා හරි පැත්ත.

දඬුවමකට වඩා නිවැරදි වීමේ අගය කියා දෙන්න
වරදකට දෙන දඬුවම අනුව තීරනය වෙන්නේ එක දෙයයි. උන් කොච්චර මුරන්ඩු වෙනවද කියන එක. උන් කොච්චර නිවැරදි වෙනවද කියන එක නෙමෙයි. නිවැරදි වීමේ වටිනාකම පෙන්වන්න. නිවැරදි වුවොත් ලැබෙන ආදරය , ප්‍රශංසාව , පිලිගැනීම පෙන්වන්න. උදාහරන දෙන්න. මගේ ජීවිතයේ උදාහරන දෙකක් තියෙනවා, උන්ගේ අගය පෙන්නීමෙන් ලෝකයට ආදරය කිරීමේ අගය පෙන්නිමෙන් අද ඉතා හොඳ දරුවන් බවට පත් වී සිටින. ඒ අංක 2 මට මහමෙරක් තරම් වටිනව.

මේ හැම දේකටමත් වඩා ගුරුවරු අපි අතින් මගෑරෙන දෙයක් තියනව. ඒ දේ තමයි උන්ගේ අනාගතය!

උන්ව විස්වාස කරන්න.. හදවතින්ම විස්වාස කරන්න....
උන් අපේ පැතුම් නොබිඳින බව විස්වාස කරන්න. ඒ බව කියන්න.පුන පුනා කියන්න.... මේ දරුවන්ට කිසිම විටෙක දැනෙන්න දෙන්න එපා අපිට එයාලගේ අනාගතය ගැන සැක සහිත බව... හැම විටම එයාල සතු අපරිමිත මොලය ගැන වටහල දෙන්න. එයාල ඇතුලේ විස්මය ජනක හැකියාවන් හැංගිල තියන බව අදහන්න. හදවතින්ම අදහන්න. උන් ආසා දේ දිහා පරීක්ෂාවෙන් බලා ඉන්න. ඒ හැකියා හඳුනා ගන්න. ඒවා මොට කරන්න නම් එපා. අසා දේට ඉඩ දී ඒවාට උසි ගන්වන්න. බැරි දෑ බලෙන් පටවනන් එපා. අකැමති දේවලින් දුර්වල වෙද්දි උන්ගේ මුලු පෞරුෂයම බිඳින්න එපා. එහෙම කලොත් , අනාගතයේ රටට වැඩැති අසාමන්‍ය මොලයක් ඔබ අබ්බගාත කර දානව වෙනන් පුලුවන්. එයාලගේ හැකියාවට ගරු කරන්න. හදවතින්ම අගය කරන්න. එයාලට මහා පරිමාණ අරමුණු දෙන්න. ඒ අරමුණු අනිවාර්‍යයෙන්ම ඔවුන් ඉ‍ටු කොට පෙන්වාවි..

එයාලගේ දුර්වලකම් පෙන්වනවට වඩා වටින දේ තමයි එයාලගේ වටිනාකම් පෙන්වල දෙන එක. එයයි මම දකින උසස්ම මෙහෙවර.

බලං ගියහම හිතනවට වඩා වගකීම බරපතලයි නේද? අමතක කරන්න එපා... අහිංසකයින් ගොඩ දෙනෙක් යන දිශාව තීරණය කරන්නෙ අපි! ලේසි නෑ...

ගුරුවරයෙක් වෙන්න පතන්න එපා. ගුරු දෙවියෙක් වෙන්න පතන්න... එතකොට මේ ලෝකය තැනෙන හැටි දිහා බලාගෙන අපිට සැනසුම් සුසුමක් හෙලන්න පුලුවන් වේවි!
