Soon we will be using robots for experiments instead of the innocent animals .I'm sure this will thrill animal rights organizations and everyone of us.Now let me make this straight. I'm definitely "against" the use of animals for experiments, animal testing of chemicals and even cloning. For your information more than 3.1 million experiments are done in the U.K. alone every year! You may know that I am a robotic enthusiast, hobbyist and a great lover of intelligent machines.Thats my field,I can't help it. But I'm not insanely obsessed with robots! [Or am I? Just kidding.]But my question is how long would it really take for an activist group against the use of robots for experiments to ...

Dear Thack, I hope you're doing well. Its weird how we all start a written message or a mail with that statement... Since I know you well, I know that to everyone's eye you must be "doing well"... Then again I know your fluctuating moods. I think I know you well enough to say that you're bugged with something... Of coz unlike most other people I know, instead of your face and your words, your published work has always been the reflection of your inner self. and even that is not straight forward!! You always hide your emotions in a cyclone of (almost) irrelevant words within your work. I should say that ...

Ephemeral Ruminations
Have you ever paid attention to the background sounds and noises in a natural environment - as opposed to a city environment? If you have really got into it, you may have found that it is an excellent meditation – one way of stopping that incessant voice in your head that keeps on its chatter, bringing up all manner of stuff that causes shifts in moods that are often counter-productive to equanimity. The night-sounds are particularly loud and go on virtually ceaselessly through the night, as the crickets, cicadas, frogs, night birds and other nocturnal critters get their cycles going. And if you’re like Java or me, you will find a kind of rhythm and music in the sounds ...
Lanka Rising
The long march of democracy in Eastern province started with the liberation of Mavillaru sluice gate from LTTE and restoring the supply of water for the innocent farmers in the area. It was a time when LTTE artillery were even targeting Tricomalee town and strategic Navy camp as a result of shameful CFA signed by UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha and Prabakaran. The monks of JHU timely influenced the government to take speedy action at a time when new UPFA government seemed to be trapped with the CFA signed by previous UNP leadership. The success of Mavillaru operation not only prevented another attempt of LTTE to chase away Sinhala and Muslim farming community from Eastern province, but also mark the beginning ...

A cyclone hits Burma (Myanmar). People need help. The murderous self appointed, incompetent, Generals cannot handle the situation. They don’t ask for help, they drag their feet. Monks start to take steps to clean up and help the people.
Some countries offer to help - but not without strings.
The first few hours are critical. The Generals and the lawmakers in other countries seem to not have given first preference to the suffering masses, but to other thoughts. The Generals: to remain in power. The politicians of some countries: how can we use this situation to spread our version of “democracy”.

The news Raids against 'software pirates' in Colombo caught me by surprise this morning while I was going through the news papers. I'm not sure whether similar raids have been carried out in the past but it was unexpected. I'm really glad that such action has been taken to protect the Intellectual Property Rights for software. But where does it lead to? The next target will be the general users of pirated software. But have we educated people about pirate software? Do they know the consequences of using pirated software?
As far as I can see it, 90% of the general public are unaware of the fact that they are doing ...

The post is the consequence of two separate situations that mirrored one issue. The first one being a post I read I few days ago, which I found very unsettling and offending. The second situation was a surge of hate views I came across on the web towards a young actress/celebrity, who posted pictures on her Myspace wearing short shorts, bathers etc.

Competitive elections are usually seen to require freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and some degree of rule of law. Civilian control of the military is often seen as necessary to prevent military dictatorship and interference with political affairs. In some countries, democracy is based on the philosophical principle of equal rights.
An election is a decision-making process by which a

The Asian Human Rights Commission congratulates the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE) for taking up a pluralistic approach in incorporating members to engage in election monitoring thereby standing above the partition political approach that has been the curse of Sri Lankan politics. Election monitoring must be done on the basis of norms and standards of free and fair elections and on that basis alone. As elections involve all citizens it is not possible or advisable to separate one section of voters from others when it comes to the issue of monitoring. It must be said to the credit of the Sri Lankan voter that by and large, the voters know how to distinguish in voting for ...

The election for the Eastern Provincial Council has been concluded. I have long taken a dim view of these Provincial Councils: all they do is add another layer of unnecessary bureaucracy to an already inefficient administrative system. If anyone know what value the provincial councils add to the public let me know. As far as I can see they are little more than vehicles for the lining of the pockets of corrupt politicians. In my opinion we should abolish the damned provincial councils, simplify the administrative work and distribute the remaining administrative powers between the centre and the municipalities of the towns and villages concerned, with resultant savings in administrative costs and the cost of running elections. ...

Yet another 'crucial' (to whom it is crucial is questionable) election is over and as usual winners take it all while losers cry foul. This is part and partial of Sri Lankan elections and when these 'losers' come into power they totally forget what they have been through and easily forget to set up powerful independent bodies to hold elections. They speak against malpractices only when they are at the receiving end. We can remember the days of UNP and CBK where hundreds and thousands of votes were rigged and laws were grossly ignored. Why cry only when you are in the opposition? The present regime too will cry foul if and when they are in the opposition. Till that ...

When you spend almost four hours with a bunch of people, they kind of grow on you, and become second family. Which has happened with the “citizens” of City of Verona. Last Christmas, we had a Christmas party. We celebrate birthdays with high spirits. We have a wedding coming up. We have become second family.

The problem with cloud computing is two fold.
One, the assumption based on the marketing spiel and hype that surrounds it that nothing will ever go wrong with data stored on and accessed via the Internet and web. Two, when something awry does occur, the almost complete inability for cloud services and products to continue functioning with even reduced functionality. Google Gears and Adobe’s AIR may offer some relief, but the WordPress outage for over 2 hours this morning (SL time) was a sobering reminder than reliance on hosted / cloud solution comes at a price - when things go wrong, one is at the complete mercy of the service providers.
